Lift up the sofa cushions, rummage through old jeans, break those piggie banks - Final Fantasy is now in trading card form.

Square Enix announced the new merchandise last month, and recently revealed new details for the upcoming collection - a series of battle cards featuring your favourite faces from the Final Fantasy world.

The trading cards are set to launch in Japan on February 25th, available in two starter kits: Black and White. Each set, available for 1,500 yen ($18), contains 50 cards, including a unique special card (much like the Pokémon Trading Card series).

Boosters cost 330 yen ($4) and contain 8 randoms. There are also five different "grades" of how often the cards appear - from common to premium, with 160 normal cards and 162 premium.

There are 3 types of cards:
Forward - Basic cards used for attack and defense against other forwards.
Backup - Provide "Crystal Points" needed to use actions and support Forwards.
Summons - Single use cards offering special moves/effects.

They got a bit lazy with these. Couldn't they have created new art for them instead of recycling old art?

That's what I was thinking too. And it looks too simplistic if all the text will go where "sample" is. It should be good for collectors, though.

This is a very bad, and poorly timed idea.

I'll be collecting the enTIRE set for FF6, FF8, FF4 & FF9, screw 7 I'm sorry but I'm tired of FF newblets talking like it's the best in the series.

Every 20 year gaming veterain KNOWS that FF6 is still the best in the series. Greatest villian (Kefka's got a better personallity & has ACTUALLY accomplished what he set out to do so shut it doubters) as well as the largest cast of heros & summons along with the most memorable musical score right along with FF8!!
It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone.Smilie
