Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS: Link Enters Hyrule on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Remember venturing into Hyrule Field for the first time in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Experience the feeling once again in a handful of snaps from the 3DS version of the much loved Nintendo 64 classic.

We find Young/Kid Link trotting about, Kokiri Sword and shield at the ready to fend off viscous hordes of cut-able grass and the odd skeleton or two that roam the vast Hyrule Field after dark.

I guess my only gripe would be the textures. They look really low res.

Well, the shots from Kokiri Forest didn't start to look really good until a few weeks ago and considering that it's still February and the game won't be out until after E3, I'm sure that we'll see a similar improvement here. Smilie

There isnt much you can do about textures until you have hardware comparable to the PS3/360. I dont know where the 3DS sits with the home consoles in terms of power. I guess the wii?

How much more powerful is the 3DS compared to the PSP? Is it marginal or considerable.

Screw Hyrule field, how much better can that look?

I want to see Hyrule Castle and the town etc.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

Nintendo games never have hi-res textures for environments. That's why the loading times are so short and you don't get texture popup. It's just a different way to approach the problem.

The 3DS is capable of a lot more than the PSP, that's what I can see. This looks fine, you've got to remember, this is just an update of a game that was released 12-13 years ago.

The true capabilities of the 3DS are shown in games such as both of the Resident Evils and Super Street Fighter IV.

Heck, Ono even said he saw Resident Evil 5 running on the 3DS. Yes, it was a modified version, but you can kinda guess where the 3DS is placed in terms of graphical capabilities (For me it's somewhere between the Wii and 360/PS3).

I still say they can do this game better justice. It looks like all Nintendo did was put over a smoother texture instead of REMAKING everything from scratch like they SHOULD have.

From what I understand in reading about the hardware, the system is last gen in terms of raw power, but the GPU can perform current generation effects in hardware.

So its akin to taking say, a random GameCube or PS2 game and then layering current generation effects over it. The result is that you get a system that is capable of having games that look somewhat close to their current gen partners, yet using much less powerful (and cheaper) hardware.

The downside to this approach though is that the hardware is likely stuck in the last gen when it comes to things like number of enemies on screen, complex AI, or physics interactions. Just because it can emulate the look of a current gen game doesn't mean it can do everything those systems are capable of.

I have to say Im not that excited by this as I thought I would be. I think its my bias towards handhelds. I much prefer consoles. I would have prefered to see this on wii2 in the distant future. I want to see the same artistic style given a HD make over. Much more detail to textures environments. The towns more fleshed out. Perhaps an overal of the towns (more added to them/layout change) but not dungeons.

As I said before akin to what square did with their demo of FF7 running on PS3.

But I stress I dont mean I wanted to see a life like zelda - same cartoon style just fully fleshed out. Integrated motion controls as well.

People texturing-moaning should chill. It's not like we're going to be playing this on a HDTV. I'm sure it'll look great on that (by comparison) tiny 3DS screen.

This is true BUT with the legacy this game has it should have a more thoughtout, better respected remake attempt & not just a smoothed over port. I'm sorry but this looks pretty much like what SOny did with the God of War Collection on ps3. Now to clearify I am NOT a graphic whore, but Nintendo did say this was a remake...& remakes usually intale being REMADE from the ground up.....which this & Star Fox 64 do not look like.

I'm gonna buy it, I know it'll be fun....but good luck convinsing other people when looking at Super Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil Revilations, Metal Gear Solid 3, DOA Dimentions & even Kid Icarus Uprising...Nintendo needs to respect their I.P.s more.

You have no idea how many people wouldn't buy this/would be pissed off if they gave Ocarina of Time a total makeover like you demand. They don't make this remake to simply make some easy money and get it touched up for a new generation of gamers, they also make this game for long-time fans like us. Long-time fans who are filled with nostalgia and you can imagine that a majority of them would prefer a reaction like "Damn, this looks so much better now!" over "That's supposed to be *random thing in the game*? I liked the old look much more..." in the case of your suggested total overhaul. It's just how nostalgia rolls. All those things have grown dear to people and they don't want those things to change much, if not at all.

PS: In my opinion, people who refuse to buy this game only because SSFIV among others look better aren't worth playing it in the first place.

Star Fox 64 actually looks completely different to what it did on N64. Definitely more of an upgrade than this. In my opinion, this still looks great. It's my most favourite Zelda game of all time... on a handheld. I'm sorry, but that is the greatest thing ever.

I have to say, I would have much preferred it on Nintendo's next-gen home system, as well.

It is a remake and if you're going to do a remake of one of the best games of all-time, I would have thought you would want the best for it. Putting it on an uncomfortable handheld, with a small screen and making it have visuals that are just slightly better isn't that impressive, in my opinion.

If anything, it seems like a really wasted opportunity. I mean, now they've remade it once, I doubt they ever will again. What we got, was a slight visual improvement (which is even arguably better) and that's it.

I couldn't care less about how it looks as long as I see what it is. I've been waiting for this! The idea of having Ocarina of Time available wherever I am is great, long travels wont be that bad anymore. Smilie

Slight improvment? Umm..ok it's like comparing Ocarina of Time to Twilight Princess and saying there is only a slight graphical difference...

I can see a major difference. Though we both know this is going to turn into another pointless debate, which I refuse to take any further.

Yeah I agree there is a major difference and the textures and polygon level of 3DS OoT all look pretty similar to Twilight Princess, which is a major upgrade from the n64 version.
