Nintendo 3DS Cleans-Up in Japan on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo's 3DS console has arrived in Japan and blown the competition out of the water after just two days on sale. The hardware sold nearly 375,000 out of its initial stock supply of 400,000 and all eight of its launch titles landed in the Media Create Top 50 Software list. The top release, despite many believing it would be the trio of nintendogs + cats games, was actually the fifth entry into Level-5's multi-million selling Professor Layton puzzle adventure series, Professor Layton and the Mask of the Miracle, which landed at No.3 with sales of around the 120,000 mark, sitting behind two big-name PSP releases from SEGA (Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity) and Bandai Namco (SD Gundam G Generation), yet ahead of the No.4 game from Nippon Ichi, Disgaea 4 on PS3.

According to Dengeki, the Shiba & New Friends version of nintendogs + cats sold 31,153 units, the Toy Poodle edition did 25,800 and the French Bulldog was by far the weakest with around 7,000 sales. According to Media Create, the software attach rate for the 3DS hardware was 0.95, meaning that several systems were bought without an accompanying game and backs up the reports of people picking up the 3DS purely to re-sell it for a profit. This could also be a result of the 3DS coming with software pre-installed as well, though.

Check out the full Top 50 from Media Create below, plus the hardware numbers at the bottom:

Wow the 3DS really did wipe the floor, lets hope that the 3DS wipes the floor in the US.

When all is bad don't look for a easy way out. Because you wont know what to do once your out

It was reported as pretty much a sell out everywhere in Japan, but thankfully Nintendo got more stock out on the Sunday, so it should help keep sales buoyant next week.

I'm interested to see how the software side holds up. Square Enix and Ubisoft seem to be the biggest losers on the 3DS launch list, although I think PES3D also underperformed, tbh.

Anyone spotted this yet, btw?

OUCH!! The Wii game only sold something like 40-50,000 lifetime, so already it looks like moving to multiple platforms really paid off, and previous Wii owners are jumping ship.

If we had Layton at launch, I know I'd pick it up too. As it stands I'll probably wait and pick up Pokemon White with my 3DS, unless Monkey Ball gets reviewed well. I've played SFIV before (not really my thing) and most everything else feels distinctly shovelled (even most of Nintendo's offerings don't seem to have the substantiality of SM64DS (I realise the hypocrisy of that statement)). It's really a shame that Ocarina missed launch.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

These were the Famitsu scores for the initial batch of games:

Nintendogs + Cats (3DS, Nintendo): 10 / 9 / 9 / 10 - (38/40)
Sengoku Musou Chronicle (3DS, Koei): 9 / 9 / 8 / 8 - (34/40)
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (3DS, Capcom): 9 / 8 / 8 / 9 - (34/40)
Super Monkey Ball 3D (3DS, Sega): 9 / 8 / 8 / 7 - (32/40)
Winning Eleven 3DS Soccer (3DS, Konami): 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (32/40)
Ridge Racer 3D (3DS, Bandai Namco): 8 / 8 / 7 / 9 - (32/40)
Layton Kyouju to Kiseki no Kamen (3DS, Level 5): 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (32/40)
Shangai 3D Cube (3DS, SunSoft): 7 / 7 / 7 / 5 - (26/40)
Tobidasu! Puzzle Bobble 3D (3DS, Square Enix): 6 / 6 / 6 / 6 - (24/40)
Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D (3DS, Ubisoft): 6 / 6 / 6 / 6 - (24/40)

Nice to see the PSPGo was a giant flop.

I have both consoles now and can say that any game that is cross platform I will pick up the PS3 version in a heart beat. I would even pay £10 more for the privilege. The new Grand Slam tennis is a PS3 purchase in summer with PS Move. And Im glad the ghibli game is on PS3. Visually it looks stunning.

All of them are highly dubious, I'd wait for Western reviews.

Ridge Racer 3D looks worse than an old PSP game, while Sengoku Basara Chronicles looks like a cheap portable rehash hack n slash. Super Monkey Ball 3D as well as looking bad visually, looks like uninspired crap in terms of it's gameplay also.

A bit harsh. XD

It's cool to see a new console up there though, this generation is starting to drag on.
