Nintendo 3DS Leads the Way in Japan on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

In its second week of release over in Japan, Nintendo's new 3DS handheld has again topped the Media Create charts. Whilst the system dropped from its launch weekend sales of ~400,000 to nearly 210,000 units this week, reports from Japan are that at the time of Media Create's report, Nintendo had shipped around 600,000 units in total to Japanese stores and the 'sold out' status is still running rampant across the country.

On the software side of things, Square Enix's Dissidia sequel starts off considerably slower than its predecessor (which is at the 950,000 mark, according to Dengeki), yet still claims the No.1 spot. Elsewhere, some Nintendo 3DS software may look to be struggling, with Super Monkey Ball 3D showing an average performance. 6,500 sales in its first week may not seem too bad for a franchise that fails to perform well in Japan anyway, but given the launch hype of 3DS, it should be doing better. Shanghai 3D Cube from Sunsoft on 3DS does even worse, landing at No.45 in its first week.

As for last week's 3DS software, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle continues to ride highest, with sales now reaching the 180,000 mark and the trio of nintendogs + cats titles trundling towards 110,000 sales. Samurai Warriors: Chronicles is the only other 3DS game to cling onto a Top 10 position, selling nearly 80,000 units in total. Interesting to note is how even though Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition has dropped four to No.11, its lifetime sales of 61,624 place it higher than the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Since the 3DS is new and its install base is so low compared to the other consoles, the 3DS game sales seem lower than we are used to.
