Nintendo Patent Reveals Wii Mood Light on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

A newly uncovered patent reveals a possible lighting solution for the Wii that reacts to how you play certain games.

Mood lighting in technology is not uncommon, however for video gaming it's hardly been touched upon.

The patent, devised sometime in 2009, gives useful applications for the tech - shooting on target in a FPS, special hits in a fighter or even setting the stage for a dancing game for example. Games could be set to vary the lights, colours, intensity and effects on specific button presses.

Nintendo also propose the light be used to match a game's backing track - perhaps in a horror title or rhythm game to add that extra layer of atmosphere.

Via Siliconera.

What do you think of the Nintendo "Wii Light" - would it be useful for certain games, would you need one?

I'm wondering if this is some hint on what the next motion cencing system Nintendo will be making will utilize.

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

I think this sounds incredibly awesome and could be used in some pretty cool ways.

Would certainly be cool if you play a game at night and all those lights and effects pop up depending on what happens in the game. Smilie

PlayStation Move does this kind of thing.

I like this concept. I think it would be quite cool to have ambient colours aid the experience of certain games like Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda, be it providing lighting to music, or using it as a way to pass on notifications.

I thought this was gonna be about a redesigned, smaller Wii. Lulz.

I think its a great idea, would be really cool playing a game in the dark with this plugged in! Smilie it would really add to the atmosphere of the game i think! Smilie

I doubt this will ever see the light of day.

funky idea, but not worth it if they only release 4 games that use it.

This is the revolution for the next home console!

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

Seems pretty cool. I think it would be used to good affect in dramatic/emotional cut scenes too. Smilie

I think this could be a part of it, enhanced sensor bar. Also, Vitality Sensor incorporated into a new controller...though maybe they'll still do Wii Relax as well. E3 will make things clearer.

Would work well for a groud up console, as then it could get more support. Also the consoles OS could even "guess" lighting for older games based on the screen edges.
The only problem is I suspect they might get sued as some TVs do this already;

They can't be sued since they own the patent for this particular application.
