Jack Tretton Calls Nintendo Handhelds Babysitting Tools

Jack Tretton Calls Nintendo Handhelds Babysitting Tools on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Speaking in a recent interview with CNN Money, Sony CEO, Jack Tretton discussed his thoughts on the company's competitors. Microsoft and Nintendo both got bad-mouthed by Tretton and he inevitably praised his own company's systems.

He explained that the PS3 is "just hitting its stride" and praised it for including a hard-drive and Blu-Ray support. He then went on to say Nintendo's and Microsoft's home consoles were losing steam in terms of continuing to be relevant in 2011 and beyond. He continued by saying: "I mean, you’ve gotta be kidding me. Why would I buy a gaming system without a hard drive in it? How does this thing scale?"

After a mocking of lack of hard-drives and a stab at Microsoft's Kinect, Tretton then turned back to Nintendo and they're handheld systems. What is his views on them? apparently they are "babysitting tools". Tretton siad: "Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those. He’s too old for that."

What are your thoughts on Trettons remarks?

Makes you wonder about his own self-respect if he feels the need to talk smack about the competition instead of talking about their own products and their selling points.Smilie

That has to be one of the most idiotic things I've ever seen anyone say ever.

Oh shit, the Wii had no hard drive! How ever will I be able to enjoy Super Mario Galaxy too knowing that? Knowing Nintendo, they put no effort into at all and will need to patch with via DLC, may even charge too, but they can't because there's no hard drive!

This is kinda funny.
Idk it's weird to see such high up people being so immature and single minded about videogaming.

He was obviously sexually abused as a child. Either that, or he's got the biggest ego ever. Either way, it isn't working for me.

This is why I don't like Sony, it's full of egotistical pricks like Jack Tretton.

The guy is a idiot. Part of the problem with games is the need to attach the term maturity. What makes somethin cool and mature makes it saleable.

He does have some valid view points. But his adolescence means they get lost.

THe PS3 is hitting its stride and is the most relevant console on the market. I havent been of the thing since xmas. I watch borrowed copies of entourage (stored on the harddrive) I bought my first blurays, Its a great DVD player. The demo system is great to trial and online store is quick to load (2-3 secs tops) Third party games are steadily coming out: Dead space, La Noir, Portal 2, Deus Ex, Ghibli game, not to mention first party (last guardian, little big planet, Drake)

I just caught the trailer of bioshock infinity and it looks so amazing. These games arent just about the most realistic. They all look stunning textually art style wise. THe PS3 gives these games a sense of immersion the wii would miss ten fold.

The wii has games coming this year but its patchy and has been on and of. Its clearly lost the 3rd party multi platform race. You just cant argue against that.

Funny cause many a time Ive seen 20 years old both Male and female in cars buses and planes playing with thier DS's and Gameboys. I have yet to see a PSP. So cram it. Badmouth Nintendos Home consoles understandable I do it too. But in the handheld market shut your mouth cause they been destroying you since day one. Thank you and have a nice day.

The 3DS has been out for a week, the PSP has been out for over half a decade...

Also, this guy reasons worse than most of the people did in my high school. Name-calls like them, too.

This reminds me of the time Ken K. (father of playstation) stated "If you want to play Pokemon, buy a DS, if you want to play Gran Turismo, buy a PSP"
Ofcourse people answered in the hundreds and millions.
Who would buy a console without a HDD? What? You mean like we had been doing for nearly 20 years before the XBOX?
Ofcourse the Wii had no HDD, but people yet again answer his question nearly by the hundreds and millions.
The most successful consoles to date are minus a HDD, fact.

Understand Nintendo couldnt compete with MS or Sony when the GC was released let alone them both together. The Wii had to be something drastic, Nintendo couldnt risk obscurity, being 'noticed' WAS all that mattered, face it, besides a few games, have they really pushed motion (plus) gaming via 1st party devs? I believe the Wii is a serious money printing machine, Nintendo got it right, just, but the amount of luck they have had with it they could never have known, success beyond measure, and then advertise advertise advertise, with a hell of a budget, just as Play Station ads seem few and far between.
Nintendo is now in the position of Sony when it was PS vs XBOX vs GC, but with a stella 1st party dev team, they have complete brand awareness, a sky high budget, a reputation as innovaters of the new standard, and theyre building a new $156million R+D facility in Japan to be complete next year.
All Nintendo has to do now is not fumble the ball away to competition as they so regretfully did to Nintendo.
It must be hard not to be so confident with the 3DS, if it fails on the biggest scale, Sony can give up 3D too, as the mass market will just see it as a headache. (I have no problem, you even start to build a tolerance to it) Nintendo has stated 3d will not be the big thing about Wii2, ofcourse not, theyre are just testing the water with 3ds, if it booms, it booms, but it will be 3d capable.
Maybe stereoscopic lights akin to never released Wii Light that surrounds you in sync with onscreen action, similar to a music visualizer. Whatever there planning, HD 3D has to be powerfull, power was Nintendo forte once also, the SNES brought arcade perfect conversions home, the N64 was advertise as the most powerful games console, the GBA was a portable SNES, The DS a portable N64, the 3DS a portable Wii, theyve caught up on their selves and now its time for something big. Roll on Zii.

"no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those. He’s too old for that."

This self-respecting 22 year old would and would also never touch a PSP.

I just don't understand why CEO's engage in these mud slinging bouts. Reggie was asked about the NGP and he said that he cannot take into account a system that has not launched and has not released much information about. I bought a PSP Go (I know, big mistake) and while I have no love for the machine, I do appreciate that it is insanely light and thin. Just because they are the competition does not mean you have to insult it. Yet I'm not surprised at all about this, as Sony has a history of this immaturity.

And why is he so happy that the PS3 is picking up steam so late in this console cycle? Smilie The Xbox 360 has been successful for years and we all know about the Wii console sales. In addition Xbox Live hasn't turned into the mess that PSN has. And at least my 360 and Wii don't gather dust like the PS3, with both the 360 and Wii having a ton of local multi-player games. Meanwhile the PS3 is mainly a blu-ray player. -_-

My last point is his remark about age. I'm twenty-one years old and considered myself a self-respecting person, yet I have a 3DS, which I love so much and take it everywhere I go. So I guess that means I have no self-respect and like baby systems. Thanks for the heads-up Jack, I'm just going to go play with my Play-Doh now.

Mr. Hockey91 (guest) 09.04.2011#18

Thats interesting because, he is insulting anyone who has a Gameboy or a DS. I'm 22 years old and I play my Gameboy, and DS all the time. And he didn't explain why "He's too old for that" why aren't people who play the PSP too old for that?

Im 27 and ill play my 3DS on a plan, in my car ( assuming someone else is driving), and on a boat.

This man is incredibly ignorant. He obviously didn't see any footage or pics taken from the huge New York City 3DS launch party. It was pretty damn awesome seeing so many 20-30+ year old, old school Nintendo fans eager for it's launch. I'm 32 and can't get enought of it.

He's definitely not going to attract positive attention from prospective PS brand owners with these kinda remarks. His remarks on babysitting are ironically hilarious considering the immature nature of them. Smilie Smilie

That's only 'cause 3DS is sold out.

( Edited 09.04.2011 22:14 by MechaG2 )

Chance favors the prepared mind.

Actually MechaG2 I think it has more to do with the 3DS not having any RPG's yet. That's the only reason why the PSP outsold the 3DS this week in Japan. Everywhere else around the world the PSP is pretty much dead and the 3DS is out selling it by a lot.

Our member of the week

Well the PSP has Riiiiiidge Raaaacer !

Oh but the 3DS does too now Smilie (and so did the DS for that matter Smilie )

Sony on Nintendo,
Step 1: claim whatever their doing is a gimick and will be gone in a year.
Step 2: get thrashed in sales
Step 3: Copy whatever Nintendo is doing and claim to be inivative and more advanced when compairing self to 4-5 year old competition.
Step 4: Nintendo releases new console with something they hadn't thought.
Repeat.

Haha, anyone remember this?

@ Sony CEO

If you want to play amazing, first party, games... year after year, after year. Get Nintendo, if you want if want games that have absolutely no story or anything of major interest go with Sony.

And don't give me, sony doesn't advertise, neither does Nintendo when was the last time you ever saw a game carrying Nintendo's name have an advertisement?
And nintendo's first party, or games published by them, sell like there's no tomorrow. so apparently Nintendo knows a good game when they see it, even if it is on an "infariour/weaker" product.

the only few games that I saw fail pathetically, are the games on the virtual boy, and Wii music.
