E311 Media | Retro Studios Driving 3DS Mario Kart this Year on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Update #2: During Nintendo's Developer Roundtable earlier this morning, Miyamoto confirmed that Retro Studios, the folk behind the sublime Metroid Prime and more recently, Donkey Kong Country Returns is helping out with the new 3DS racer.

Original Story
Nintendo have shed some light on their upcoming Mario Kart 3DS title. The latest instalment will see players racing their way through the Mushroom Kingdom with karts that have new abilities; Hit a big jump and they can deploy wings to glide over tracks for short cuts, or dive under water with the help of the propeller. This time around, players will also be able to show off their flair for style by customising their own vehicles and accessories; such as adjusting tire sizes for on/off road courses.

Favourite faces will return, and much like the Wii version, players will be able opt to play as their Mii character to race on a variety of tracks; from city streets and dusty deserts to Wuhu island and the jungles of Donkey Kong Country Returns. There may even be a few old favourites thrown in too!

In full 3DS fashion, Mario Kart 3DS will support both SpotPass and StreetPass content, as well as the ability to compete in local wireless and online matches which Mario Kart DS did so well.

The game looks too blocky. It reminds me too much of the N64. Looking rough. Hopefully they can make it more of a gamers game. THe wii game was focussed too much on friendly group fun and was marred by the ridiculously wide tracks and blue shell crap.

Agree - I'm not overly impressed by some of these 3DS games. In recent iterations, Mario Kart has never been designed as a graphics-whore game, but I still expect a lot more from the 3DS. I assume the cheap graphics allows more power to be put into having a lag-free racing experience.

Interesting to see Retro working on it too, and will be cool to see what they bring to the game, but surely this isn't the only thing they're doing. Would be nice to hear what they're working on for Wii U!

The Wii game was wider because of the higher number of racers on the track. Even though there is no mention of it, I would love a simple track editor. It would extend the replay time considerably.

So much this Smilie

I think its better to see Retro do the Metroid prime's and more mature games. Personally after playing DKCR I feel they are wasting their talent on games meant for everyoneSmilie

Wii Code: 6399-3866-6269-0745
PSN: SherWiinator Currently playing: LOZ: SS
Wishlist: Last Story, Pandora's tower, Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3

As much as I want them to try something new, like Star Fox on Wii U, I am dying for a new Metroid FPS on the system as well. No one will do it better than Retro. Didn't they say they were done with Metroid? Or was that only for the time being? I really hope they do another.

It won't look as blocky when you see it on the smaller screen. I thought the exact same thing for Mario Kart DS.

TBH I think Retro were sick of doing Metroid, maybe because they were so limited with what they could do or allowed to do.

Pretty sure they said they were done with Metroid but who knows? Sakurai said that he was done with Smash Bros. too and look what happened.

I'd like Retro to make an IP of their own OR to make a Star Fox game for the Wii U.

Makes sense of course. As a dev, you want to show your creative side. Being stuck in the same scifi environment for years would be hard. So of course they're entitled to do whatever the fuck they want in my book. But as long as I get my Metroid fix eventually, I'm happy.

I wonder what a 3rd person Metroid would be like. Kind of, Mass Effect style. I saw the fanmade Samus mods in ME, and damn, it looked good.

This looks set to be the most interesting Mario Kart experience. First bikes, now cars with deployable wings? Epic. Customising vehicles? Epic. Now if only they add a track editor, with the ability to upload and send your creations to friends. With a new user made/Nintendo made track being available via. SpotPass daily/weekly. (Kind of like Brawl, if you get what I'm saying?)

SpotPass has been confirmed... so hopefully we can see exactly this.. and not just ghost data. Smilie

Anyone thinking like me that the glider and propeller will open tons of new possibilities for them to create all sorts of secret passages and shortcuts both in the air and underwater ?

I think it would be great if the tracks got a slightly more complex structure and make more tracks with mulitple paths to experience and see which one is the fastest depending on what item you have maybe, and such...

I read a quote on Neogaf that has some clarification on the Retro/Mario Kart situation. Apparently, Retro only contributed to ONE LEVEL of the game, likely providing Donkey Kong Returns assets for a DK stage, or something similar.

So MK3D is still only being made by Nintendo, and Retro are still working on their undisclosed project.

There's a Donkey KonG Country Returns themed track in it. I saw a gameplay video by French website Gamekyo, the guy was racing on a track that had Tikis (the totems from DKCR) in the middle of the track.

There's the video (the DKCR track is at 4:54) :
