Zelda & Zumba Put Nintendo Back on Top

Zelda & Zumba Put Nintendo Back on Top on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The duo of Zumba Fitness on Wii and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on 3DS have helped Nintendo climb back atop the UK charts. Nintendo has recently announced that after the massive success of the 505 Games-published fitness title on Wii it will start supporting it with a round of TV adverts, and as the current campaign for the classic Ocarina of Time has shown a great TV presence is likely to catapult the game to new heights. Sadly there is a lack of Nintendo Selects titles anywhere in the chart, with only Wii Sports and Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City even in the Wii Budget Top 40 (the other games being Mario Charged Football and WarioWare: Smooth Moves). The problem could lie with the fact that Mario Strikers and WarioWare can be found online in their original format for cheaper than the 'budget' re-releases.

Below is the official Chart-Track UK blurb about the All Format chart, followed by a selection of other charts from the website:

It’s a third stint back at the top for 505 Games and ‘Zumba Fitness’ (+43%), taking a fourth week at No1 since launch of the Wii version back in week 13 this year. Zumba was last seen at No1 six weeks ago, the title receiving a massive shot in the arm this week as the Wii version jumps 51% to a second best sales week after the launch week. Last week’s No1 drops to No3 (2K/Take 2’s ‘Duke Nukem Forever’, -58%) and was 14 years in the making. This week, continuing on the theme of over a decade of patience, Nintendo debut at No2 with ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ for 3DS. After the fanfare launch of 3DS back in week 12, 2011 Nintendo’s ‘Zelda’ 3DS is certainly a title that everyone has been waiting for - week 1 sales are not that far away from the top-selling title so far (Pilotwings Resort) which was a launch title. Around 20% of UK 3DS owners bought ‘Zelda’ this week. Of course, ‘Zelda Ocarina of Time’ was originally released on N64 and stormed to No1 in the Christmas Chart of 1998 (week 51/98) breaking all records at the time to shift around 100K in that week. Square Enix take the next highest new entry at No9 with ‘Dungeon Siege III’ for 360/PS3/PC. Also new this week at No13 is EA’s ‘Alice: Madness Returns’ also for 360/PS3/PC. The final new entry is Ubisoft’s Xbox 360 ‘Child of Eden’, a Kinect-enabled multi-sensory rhythm action shooter, which is considered to be the sequel to ‘Rez’, first seen in the UK on Sega’s Dreamcast back in week 3, 2002.

I don't get it.

Zumba clearly outsold against LOZ3D in every category.

Though when I go to click the link on the home page it clearly says, "Zelda puts Nintendo back on top."

I notice it now says Zumba and Zelda in the actual article but I feel that having it say Zelda puts Nintendo on top is misleading. I think it would be fair if Zumba actually got the credit it deserved. It was clearly the most sold game of this week.

Mario, Mega Man and Rayman FTW!!!

I want to know the hardware sales! Is OoT finally the game the 3DS needed?

Well, considering what it says in the blurb, 1/5 of 3DS owners bought the game in the first weekend! That tells us:

1.) Pilotwings is owned by ~1/5 of the 3DS owners
2.) 3DS sales are very low
3.) 3DS owners were starving for a big new game

C3 has two titles, one has a character limit - I deleted the wrong word. Sorted now Smilie

Was going to get a copy of the game for the free soundtrack but after all soundtrack copies were taken on the first 24 hours and I would have had to call customer service to validate my free CD order... well, it was just one too many hoops since I don't actually own a 3DS hahaha. Hope they release the soundtrack for 500 coins on the Club Nintendo Store.

It will no doubt end up on Club Nintendo for something crazy like 5,000 Stars Smilie

Some extra data for people wondering just HOW bad the 3DS has sold in the UK:

This week Zumba Fitness sold a total of 37,900 units, and given the Wii edition sold about 90% of that, the Wii version's sales come out at 33,700 units (the remaining 400 copies on PS3, and 3,400 on 360).

With me so far? Well, that means Zelda sold a little less than than. If it sold pretty much exactly the same amount that would mean the Nintendo 3DS lifetime sales in the UK would be under 170,000. Now, considering in its first weekend it sold 113,000 units, that's an abysmal amount of weekly sales since 25th March Smilie

Also, from that, Pilotwings Resort has sold around 40,000 units since launch day.

Oh dear Smilie
