Iwata on Paid DLC for Wii and 3DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

In a Q&A session with investors last week, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata touched on a the company's approach to DLC for Wii and 3DS.

The company has only just started to offer post-release content for its systems and games through firmware changes, fixes and light content, but only in a select few games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart for Wii. A handful of 3DS games have also started to expand on the default content with additional levels, costumes and the like.

Iwata confirmed that the company is preparing a paid-for DLC system to be employed on the 3DS by the end of the year. Nintendo themselves are aiming to focus on "high quality", more substantial content for their systems. Stat upgrades or content keys were described as "low quality" and won't come from Nintendo, but other developers can utilise this sort of content if necessary.

The Nintendo president also re-iterated the company's previous stance towards free-to-play new games - the answer is no. He feels that it would damage the value of what Nintendo can offer in its games.

Very reassuring to hear that Nintendo won't start selling us half-finished games at full price and then charge us for DLC that should have come with the game. It's actually quite surprising because you can bet that many (probably including me) wouldn't be able to resist if Nintendo were to do that. Very easy money right there.

Edit: My reply is actually more about something I read in another news report on this subject. There it says that..

The CEO stated that such a DLC system, while potentially useful for generating short term profits, runs the risk of impairing the relationship between Nintendo and its customers in the longer term. Therefore, it is unlikely that Nintendo's own games will feature any paid DLC in the near future.

Maybe something worth adding to the article?

Well I REALLY hope Nintendo reconsiders this for certain series staples like Metroid, I could EASILY see DLC being used to expand upon already gargantuan sized adventures.

New enemies, extra bounties for a BOUNTY HUNTER...& even some suprised unfinished buisiness if Nintendo saw fit....yeah Metroid would be PERFECT for add ons & bonus quests just like Zelda might be...except you know with your task being done once you've killed Ganon.

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

Haha, you guys are kidding yourselves. The only reason Nintendo has been last to the starting line with DLC is because their infrastructure to support that sort of thing has always been laughable. Nintendo has always been worst in terms of value for money (look what things cost on VC even though they're the worst versions around). Now that they're getting in on the DLC game - they're gonna rape you.

It's true - Nintendo barely touch the classics and still they're bought/downloaded in droves. Take Star Fox 64 3D for example - looks great, 3D effects and portable classic-style Star Fox = WIN.

Simple online play not included... it's these little extras that Nintendo are neglecting, because they can churn out the old games with little to no improvements.
