Nintendo May Develop non-3D Games on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Discussing consoles and their unique features, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata suggested that non-3D games maybe in the pipeline.

Iwata commented that software shouldn't have to take advantage of every unique aspect of a system, and in the case of the 3DS, there are a fair few features to choose from. 3D output, StreetPass, SpotPass, voice input amongst others, and Iwata feels that even 3D itself could be an optional feature.

Nintendo may choose to develop a title that focuses more on motion play (as we know motion together with 3D has its issues), or a more social/StreetPass nature perhaps. Maybe a stronger focus on pure visual detail.

The company previously noted that there wouldn't be 3DS games that don't do 3D.

I think there could be a Nintendo 3DS software title which does not use the 3D feature at all, and I believe Nintendo will develop such software. Instead, other features of the Nintendo 3DS should be focused on. It might be a communication feature, or other functions (such as the gyro sensor or the motion sensor). The important thing is that each respective software title has its own characteristics, and appeals to the consumers in a way that fits the software.

All of the announced first party games for the 3DS do focus on 3D output as standard, however - including Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

Would you be satisfied with 3D-less games on the 3DS? Should all 3DS games output in 3D? Perhaps a cheaper "2D" version?

Pretty much anything focused around gyro or motion sensing shouldn't be 3D. I think it's safe to say now that 3D+gyro/motion is a complete failure on 3DS because it's so hard to remain in the sweet spot while moving the system around (unless you're sitting on a spinning chair, but this is a handheld, and you're not likely to find many chairs like this while on the go).

Face Raiders is the prime example of this. I say Nintendo should do non-3D games and use the horsepower that would otherwise be used for 3D output to make games even more gorgeous. But I don't see them making cheaper 2D versions of existing 3D games.

They wouldn't make cheaper 2D versions of existing 3D games just because having 2 versions would, once again, confuse some people. If they did that, you could already see complaints like "This is the Nintendo 3DS, so why isn't my game displaying in 3D?" rolling in, despite a logo on the box saying "No 3D".

I agree though, developers should really try some non-3D games as well and focus on other features of the 3DS while using that extra horsepower for graphics or whatever they want. Of course, the above thing I mentioned with confused people would apply here as well.

In my view all I see the 3D as just an "Option" like using Surround Sound instead of Stereo. I frankly play with the 3D off because firstly, I can never position it it perfectly always look like im seeing double vision and need my eyes checked out and secondly it does not improve the way you game. This is not to say its a bad thing but Nintendo have not got it right this time and don't expect them to fix it unless they bring out a Nintendo 3DSi.

Have we even seen any tech demos of how the 3DS could perform graphics-wise with the 3D disabled? I'd really like to see that.

They should raise the speed of the PICA's and create games that look better in 2D.

I'm finding that some 3D games can look worse when displayed in 3D. The jaggies are a lot more prominent and FPS take a drop.

In before Nintendo announced "SPINNING CHAIR 3D" - a regular office chair they've sourced from Ikea with "3DS" on it.

Makes sense since they've released Wii games without motion controls (Fire Emblem uses the pointer but no motion per se).

Why dont they do all features in all games? with asphalt 3d, they used 3d and streetpass. if they could make that game again, make it so that it is controlled with the motion sensor and have wifi racing... simple in my world...

It makes perfect sense to have as many features as possible on a console, then selectively use what makes sense.

I absolutely love the 3D, it adds hugely for me in the same way stero sound or even colour does.
But I still wouldnt want it forced on developers.
Choice is good.
