Yoshiaki Koizumi on Mario 3D Remakes

Yoshiaki Koizumi, director for Super Mario 3D Land, recently expressed a desire to possibly remake past Mario/Zelda games for 3DS.

When quizzed by Official Nintendo Magazine on going back and improving past games like the Zelda team did with Ocarina of Time 3D, Koizumi mentions how he would like to use the improvements in technology to someday revisit past games.

One of the examples given was the use of the Iron Boots in the original Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64. Koizumi-san worked on the interface for the game, but didn't realise that there would be a temple that relied so heavily on switching to and from the Iron Boots - the Water Temple. It's something like this that was addressed as a shortcoming with the original and improved on in the 3DS remake.

As for any specifics, Koizumi denied any interest in any one game that could be remade, but did mention Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Sunshine as two games that he would be like to see visualised in 3D, but not necessarily remade for the 3DS.

Guess I can't really say one title specifically because then the world will expect us to make it and I'll get into a whole lot of trouble!

I can say that I really would like to see a lot of those games that use 3D worlds on 2D display just so I could see what they look like in 3D and see what kind of different experiences people would have playing through them on a 3D display. So in that sense I would love to see Sunshine and both Galaxy games presented in 3D, and a lot of the Zelda [games] would be interesting too.

Would you like to see remakes of other classic Nintendo games reborn on the 3DS or Wii U?

Full 3D remake of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past...done & DONE!!
It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone.Smilie

Well if we look at history all the console Super Marios up to Sunshine have been bought to portable, SM Bros 1-3, SM World 1 and 2 on GBA and SM64 on DS so Sunshine is the next logical step for porting.
Same with the Zelda console games, Zelda, 2TAoL, and ALttP have all been bought to GBA and now Ocarina to 3DS so MAjoras mask should be next on the port schedule. Hope MM is ported, its the only polygon zelda game I havent finished, and then bring on Wind Waker as well Smilie

I'd like to see a HD Galaxy Trilogy Edition presented in 3D, but only when the take-up of 3D displays are sufficient enough. 3D should be possible on WiiU with a Firmware update.

LttP as Miyamoto wants would be OK, and possibly Minish Cap later. Oracle and Seasons would be worthy too.

Links Awakening should stay as it is I reckon.

PS:In the Wind Waker style, It's looking like the only way we'll see it again, with all the clamouring for "HD Zelda" after the E3 demo Nintendo showed.

It would make me happy as a Zelda fan if Skyward Sword ends up making fans realise the merit of cell-shaded Zelda. Nintendo fans have yet to experience it at it's highest quality, both in display and animation. With WiiU's new shaders and disc capacity, textures, lighting and animation could look far better than what we've seen so far.

    meh.
Remakes are 99% pointless. Spend the money making new games.

Any game that is already 3D however should be possible to be ported with steroscopic support. Games dont need to be remade, but they should be avaliable for each new generation.

Fully agree, Squidboy. The thing I want most is in Zelda is an HD cel-shaded one. The HD Zelda at E3 looked brilliant but next gen Celda would be amazing.

I also think that if LttP is remade it's gonna still be the top-down perspective of the original, just with added layers to produce the 3D effect on 3DS. That's what it sounded like Miyamoto was suggesting a while back anyway. So those wishing for a full 3D remake might want to hold their breath just in case.

As for Mario, I loved Sunshine. I had so much fun with it, and it would be great to have it in portable form of some kind.

I loved Mario Sunshine. It's the reason I wanted a Gamecube. I really don't want a remake though, I mean even if they did make it 150 shine sprites like they did with stars in 64DS I feel like it would be a waste.
What I would rather they do is make something akin to a cross between Sunshine and Galaxy; use the physics of water and gravity together. THAT would lead to some creative platforming...

Nintendo hire this guy! Would love to see the return of the Fludd with Galaxy style gameplay as you said - imagine the "flip the tiles" styled puzzle in combination with the water jets (is that even possible physics wise)? They could disguise Fludd as a power-up, so "Water Mario" or "Fish Mario", something like that.

Bingo! They could even give Yoshi a "Fludd Fruit" or something.
I guess what I was trying to say is that Sunshine was good, but I can't see the water thing being able to take up another whole game on its own, but the idea shouldn't be ditched completely.
Physics wise I guess you could make it situational. In some cases you would have to move water across a level using gravity to get it from one planet to the next. In some cases you could have the water simply fill up the planet like we've already seen in the galaxy series. In others you could have the water form a ring around a planet etc. I think the inclusion of gravity in the galaxy games made the environments more dynamic and the whole water thing would continue that trend. You could even go so far as to make the levels less linear and make a "Fludd route" and a "Traditional route" to get to the goal.

Well, that's all I got. Paycheck Nintendo? Smilie

Nearly everyone on this site pointed their finger at the PSP and said it was a PS2 that got crappy ports. Now everyone is stating massive enthusiasm for ports of games barely 5yrs old.
Get a grip. It would seem the original criticism of the PSP was not genuine, just a way to dismiss something you don't like.
I see no need for remakes just because they will be in 3D. Lylat wars, snake, street fighter, RE(the one just released), Zelda are all remakes. No thanks lets have the majority of top first and third party titles being new please.

Let's not forget about HD remakes of Metroid. Smilie

You know what? Just give as an updated HD Super Mario All-Stars with every Mario platforming adventure (for consoles AND portables) then do the same for Zelda, Metroid, Wario, and Donkey Kong. Then we're good. Smilie

Seriously, though. I NEED THESE!! Smilie

I prefer new games to recycling older ones, but I have to admit that I wouldn't mind an updated "3D" Wind Waker and Mario 64.

I really want to see Super Mario 64 in 3D, with new 3DS graphical powers, and 4 playable characters like in Super Mario 64 DS! Also i would like to see new worlds, and possibility to collect all 180 stars!
