Cubed3 Podcast | August 2011 - Super Mario Land 3D, Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus and more on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

This month's Nintendo aural intake serves up thoughts on various 3DS and Wii games, plus the evolution of video game music.

Last month Adam nipped down to London town for a healthy dose of 3D served up by the folk at Nintendo UK, while Mike weaved his way through the cosplaying masses at Manchester Comic Con. Nibbles included Star Fox 64 3D, Super Mario Land 3D, Luigi's Mansion 2, Kid Icarus, Heroes of Ruin and much more.

We also ponder the evolution of video game music, a selection of our favourite music and of course the sizzling summer topic this month: The 3DS price drop.

Featuring Ross Marrs, Mike Mason, Adam Riley and Rudy Lavaux

A couple of things to point out:

- It was dragon heads I blasted away at in Kid Icarus
- Nintendo's updates to the NES games is including save functionality.

Third point: I talk FAR too much. 'Welcome to The Adam Show!' Smilie

Excellent show folks!

I do agree with Ross in that I'm not the biggest fan of "classic Mario" or 2D Mario - it just really seems like we've seen it so many times before: overworld, underworld, desert, frost and Bowser's Castle. Fun games, especially in co-op, but just a little too similar.

Like when I think Adam recalls "World X - 3" or something like that - months down the line who would remember the difference between World 1-3 and 1-6? Unlike Sonic games where each Zone was clearly defined and far more memorable.

Still though, some of the better aspects of Super Mario Land 3D sound impressive.

I'm liking the sounds of Mario Kart 7 a lot more, but still uncertain about the new vehicle mechanics and lack of bikes.

RE: Star Fox, perhaps they could have used Lylat Wars as a subtitle. So keep the Star Fox title for global ease and then subtitle it, which would be far more exciting than the weird looking Star Fox 64 3D - something like Star Fox 3D: The Lylat Wars would have been ace.

Rhythm Paradise was mentioned quite a bit, does sound worth looking into.

I also agree with the comments made into the 3DS price drop and how early adopters should quit whining, but also agree that the downloadable games aren't fair for those who don't access the online services often, if at all.

Interview with Intrinsic games and the favourite songs was excellent - love the selection!

Thank you for mentioning Wave Race Adam. I'd really like to see a new one as well Smilie.

Can't say I fully agree that emotional pieces couldn't be achieved on 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. OK for 8-bit, cuz' none comes to mind, but Secret of Mana, Terranigma and Final Fantasy VI all prove that even on cartridge based console, great emotional pieces COULD be achieved Smilie.

Otherwise yeah, I agree that on the whole, the evolution of sound hardware helped make emotional or dramatic music in video games become common place. even more so for moody tracks in horror games (Resident Evil Gaiden on Game Boy Color is a disaster in the sound department). But for very rhythmic catchy tunes, nothing beats the old FM synth chips found in the Megadrive or Japanese PCs like the X68000 or PC98 Smilie. The more recent Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth is a testament to this.

Ah, also, I ordered Excitebots last week and should receive it in the post any day this coming week Smilie.

You had already mentioned it in the last podcast Mike Smilie (Either in the podcast or we discussed it when we weren't recording), so it was on my radar since then. When I saw it get a huge price cut on Play-Asia, along with two more games that I wanted, figured it was time I got round to buy those Smilie.

It'll probably get mentioned on every podcast I'm on...haha!

This is the first Cubed3 Podcast I've listened to fully. I have to say, Adam's voice is fucking epic, now I understand why he talks so much. He should start making audio books. Smilie

This was a fantastic podcast guys, I will definitely check out the future ones. I also love Rudy's accent. Smilie

Listening to it a second time, other stuff that I wanted to say came to mind :

Namco Bandai said they were happy with their software sales on 3DS in Japan so far. Then again their major games already out in Japan like Tales of the Abyss aren't out yet anywhere else. So it's not all grim in terms of Third Party satisfaction with software sales on 3DS. I think Capcom is also quite happy with how their games have been selling on the system so far, aren't they ?

Another point I wanted to raise is that I think there must be games on the 3DS that you can enjoy in short sessions. Let's not forget the rest of the library, though admittedly it's not really vast just yet.

If a 3DS owner wants a game he can enjoy on the go, in 5 minutes sessions, he won't and shouldn't bring Starfox 64 3D (or Lylat Wars, whichever you prefer Smilie). Monkey Ball for example is the kind of game you can enjoy in such short sessions.

I think there's room for both long and short experiences on handhelds in general. When I'm on the go, in long train trips that last several hours for example, I like to have an epic RPG to play on my portable console. But yeah, sometimes, being unable to save sucks. And putting the console in sleep mode not beign very helpful either on 3DS is a huge flaw in the console design.

Why they decided to go with such a cheap battery in the console is beyond me. There exist better batteries out there, I think even the DSi XL battery as a better capacity, though I need to check this. I tried an alternative third party battery supposed to last longer once but got scammed on that purchase, because it lasted shorter than the other, so I went back to using the original in the end.

EDIT : Oh yeah and on the topic of more 2D Marios, I'd like to see more new gameplay and level design ideas rather than a change in art style. In recent years, I've had more fun with 2D Marios playing mods made by fans rather than NSMB or NSMB Wii ! Games such as Luigi's Adventure Overseas Edition series (based on Super Mario World) are awesome for example.

Music from Megaman 2 for the boss at the end, for good measure Smilie !

But yeah, a cel shaded Mario could work well if implemented correctly Smilie.

Great stuff. But I couldn't quite make it until the end. Should it be split into two or three segments? I did enjoy the music feature and interview with the team as well more of this I think would be excellent.

Thank you! *bows* Listening to some of the voice work in Xenoblade, I'd have loved to have given some of the characters a good re-work!!

Do it! and then make a patch so I can run it on my copy of Xenoblade when I get it. Smilie

That would be pretty cool, actually. Just need to find the script somewhere Smilie

Other than perhaps splitting the podcast into bite-sized sections, is there anything else people want from the next issue?
