The wait is over, early 3DS adopters! You can download a selection of classic Virtual Console games from today.

The company will be offering a handful of classic games for those who lapped up the new 3D hardware at launch as means of compensation for the price drop so early in the 3DS's lifespan.

The first batch you can grab hold of today. If eligible for the offer, simply pop onto the 3DS eShop, head over to "Settings/Other" and download the ten free games from the "Title You’ve Downloaded" option.

To keep up with all the 3DS Ambassadorial news, you can of course log onto your favourite Nintendo website (hint hint) or download the "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Certificate" - a handy app that will give players a friendly nudge once the remainder of games, a selection of GBA titles, become available before the end of the year.

The current line-up of free games include:

    • Balloon Fight
    • Donkey Kong Jr.
    • Ice Climber
    • Mario & Yoshi
    • Metroid
    • NES Open Tournament Golf
    • Super Mario Bros.
    • The Legend of Zelda
    • The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
    • Wrecking Crew

Which of these games have you downloaded/are currently playing? Want to discuss your September gaming shenanigans - be sure to head over to our September "What are you Playing" forum topic.

Did anyone get a notification for this btw ? My 3DS didn't warn me at all personally. I wouldn't even know that these became available today if I hadn't read about it on Internet the day before.

This + seeing how well hidden they are in the menu... you really have to look for them ! and after each download you have to navigate back to the list to download the next one !. this all makes me wonder how they hope to reach more casual gamers with this offer since it's not properly put to the foreground in the eShop. Then again, those might not even know that the 3DS price was dropped.

They are not in the eshop yet so not everyone can see, only those who got their 3DS's early. The way they have done it is they have credited the games into your account, meaning you have these games you just need to download them. It was annoying going back and forth into the menu, though Nintendo never make menu systems simple.

Nothing prevented them from putting them right in the main screen while making them only visible to those eligible for the ambassador program. Should be easy enough to program for experts like them, they're supposed to make programs for a living, aren't they Smilie ? And if the original eShop app wouldn't have supported it, then nothing prevented them from putting forward a tiny update to prepare for the launch of those games.

I know it may sound like I'm complaining for something very minor and that doesn't matter too much in the end, but it looks to me like they really botched the job... yet again !

Actually, what it is, is that the games are not in the shop yet, it's like going to a store and having the product in the back room because the release date isn't here yet. But for us (HIGH FIVES TO ALL AMBASSADORS!) it's as if we paid for the games but accidentally deleted them from our systems, so we just have to "re-download" them. We will be able to download them from the main page once the games are no longer "in the back room". To completely change the programming behind it, would require a system update for only ambassadors. I agree it can be done, but it would be a waste of their time and money. Smilie

Very disappointed at the lack of save states. I really hope they get added when the paid versions are released.

I think half these NES games are terrible and shallow. Would have preferred SNES games instead. Bring on the GBA games I say! Smilie

Also, I think Nintendo need to do more for ambassadors. Maybe discounts on eStore games etc.

I haven't downloaded them yet but I just saw an article over on N-Europe that says that there are save features. Here's that part from their article...

Once you have a NES game up and running you can suspend the play by opening the home menu and closing the game. Open the game at a later time/date and you'll carry on from where you left. Note that if you turn off the game another way (such as turning off the 3DS) you will lose your suspended play location.

There's another part that addresses more specific things about saving in certain games...
Both of the Zelda games have hidden save menus. In order to access them you need to pause the game, select the second controller then press Up & A. You will need to switch back to player 1 to use the menu. Like the original, Metroid works from a password system - thankfully the 3DS' notes feature is accessible from the Home Menu while you're on the password screen. If you don't feel like killing Samus in order to find your current password, you can follow the same steps as Zelda - pause, switch to player 2 then pres Up & A. Note that doing this will reset the game as though you've loaded the game with the current password, meaning that you'll lose your current location.

    To select the second controller...

The 3DS also allows you to switch to the second controller. To do this hold L & R then press Y to alternate between player 1 and 2. This allows you to play the multiplayer modes in Super Mario Bros, Wrecking Crew and various other games. If you want to play the multiplayer modes in Ice Climber, Balloon Fight and Mario & Yoshi you will wait until the full versions are released on the eShop - although people who want to give themselves a massive challenge in Mario & Yoshi are welcome to give it a try.

Excessive speculation leads to unrealistic expectations, which ultimately lead to disappointment.

That is way too messy a system. Save states are a must in the paid versions. Smilie

Nintendo have said that they will be adding save states such as the ones currently seen in GB/GBC Virtual Console games to these NES games. Sadly, the GBA games will only support the save systems which are built in to the games themselves. You also will not be able to put the 3DS into sleep mode whilst playing GBA games or suspend play, to check your friend list or use the browser etc.

This is quite a shame, but hopefully if they do release GBA games to the general public, they will update the games to support all features seen in current GB/GBC VC games. Hope I helped. Smilie

Wish you could button map or choose configurations like in Mario All-stars... Playing SMB with A and B is really awkward for me, Y and B would feel much better.
They're nice for free, especially as I've never completed Zelda 1+2, will be cool to give them another go. I'm not gonna touch Metroid much, I find it way too hard. XD Zero Mission ftw. Smilie
