I may have misunderstood something... I thought the modern stages would be 3D style as they were originally... like viewing sonic from behind or something.

Are all the stages viewed from the side on 3DS ? Because here if they changed Radical Highway to a side view, that's what it makes me think of.

In the 3DS version, Modern stages are mostly played in a 2D style from what I can gather. The camera angle does change from time to time to a sort of near-behind-the-back view for certain sections, but it's mostly a left to right affair it seems. Main difference between modern and classic being the grinding, boosting, sliding, homing attacking, and other things.

That's pretty much it - modern has a slight bit more "3D" ness to him, kinda a lot like Rush/Rush Adventure with a bit more oomph. Retro is as it says on the tin - lots of classic 2D mechanics with a dollop of 3D effects thrown in for good measure.

Neither go into full 3D/Dreamcast/Adventure+ style play.
