Infaune's New 3DS Project King of Pirates

By Jorge Ba-oh 06.10.2011 4

The father of Mega Man Keiji Inafune has been hard at work on a new 3DS pirates themed adventure featuring an adorable penguin.

Inafune left Capcom last year and formed his own independent studio known as Intercept, and one of the team's debut projects is a nifty new franchise that's intended to be at least a trilogy. Translating to King of Pirates, the story revolves around the Sangokushi tale, featuring over 300 characters in a pirate setting - including cows, birds, dragons and of course, adorable penguins.

These treasure-hunting sailors are part of three races: Aves, Beasts and Scales and all three are venturing into the "dark sea" to find the missing Lucifer Coin to take control of all that is land and water.

Inafune feels the new project will help increase the 3DS's user-base and felt Nintendo's portable was the ideal platform to bring a quality akin to the House of Mario's efforts. That said, he does acknowledge that the 3DS has its fair share of problems getting it's foot in the door.

For now, the rather scrumptious CG trailer and initial concept renders for your viewing pleasure.

What do you think about Inafune's new 3DS concept? What gameplay styles would you like to see from the new game?

I read somewhere else that this is supposed to be an action-RPG. I wonder what the gameplay will be like. Is the whole action going to take place aboard ships ? Hope to learn more about that in the near future Smilie.

Inafune would share just a few gameplay details, as there are still many things to be finalized. He's certain that the game will have two broad types of combat. One will be ship to ship, the other will be person to person. The game will have 300 characters, some strong on their own and some strong in groups, and the fun of selecting which character to use will be part of the gameplay.

One surprising statement Inafune made at the press conference yesterday is that the game is being planned as a trilogy. The story may be too long to fit into three parts, he admitted. Each game will have its own conclusion, though.

Like Sangokushi, the games will span hundreds of years. The penguin character, who's meant to be Liu Bei, will even have kids.

The game won't look like the CG concept trailer that we were shown yesterday. But Inafune did say that he expects the 3DS title to retain the same design style even with the visuals brought down to the system's specs. He expects to be able to deliver something playable that has the same image as the concept trailer.

Additionally, he points out that Nintendo makes a lot of kids oriented games, and he wants to make something at the same level of quality as a Nintendo game. Thus, he felt that 3DS would be the best platform.

It all sounds like a very ambitious project by Inafune. I hope he'll deliver. Smilie

Looks super-cute! Definitely eager to see what he and the team will pull off gameplay wise.

Anyone else getting a Dynasty Warriors (with a touch of pirates) vibe from this?
I'm getting one sadly and I hate DW.
Anyway, I hate to say it, but the animation has a sort of low-quality unfinished look to it. I'm not dismissing it yet, though. I guess I'll just wait for gameplay footage.
