Mario Wields a Boomerang in Super Mario 3D Land on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo have been treating us with heaps of new screenshots and trailers for their big upcoming titles over the past few days. In the mix of all this, Nintendo World Report spotted something exciting. A leaked piece of artwork for Super Mario 3D Land reveals a new suit! That's right, the artwork below shows Mario in some fresh new attire and wielding a boomerang in his hand (presumably to throw at enemies).

Mario now resembles a Boomerang Bro down to a tee, even completed with a helmet and shell attached to his back. The enemy's first made their appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES. Mario's Tanooki suit also returns from that game and now comes in a special white colour turning Mario invincible.

Yeah! Whatever happened to Mario's hammer, way back from Donkey Kong? I don't recall it being used in Mario games since... Anyone remember any? Hammer Bro suit would be great!

Mario has quite a few hammers as weapons in Super Mario RPG, that's the only game that comes to my mind right now though. His hammer might have been in one of the Paper Mario games as well but I can't say for sure since I've only played Super Paper Mario on Wii.

Oh of course, now that you remind me, the hammer is a prominent feature in the Mario and Luigi games and Paper Marios. Definitely would be a cool item to use in a platformer for a change though!

You haven't played the Paper Mario games? I imagine PM2 is expensive, but seriously, you need to play that game. Simply amazing.

Wasn't there a hammer bro power-up in SMB3? I'm pretty sure there was a suit where it allowed Mario to throw hammers like the Hammer Bros.

Oh, and I still need to get TTYD... I wish I knew someone who owned it and was willing to sell it to me. ;-;

Huzzah! With this many throwbacks to past Mario Games, here's hoping they'll also give poor old Mario a little bit of HAMMER TIME!

This might be the coolest power up for Mario ever.

I personally find it cooler than fire/ice, and I'd rather have 1 nifty boomerang than a bag full of hammers. Smilie

I guess Nintendo was serious when they announced Boomerang week/month or whatever it was.

The ice suit in Mario Galaxy is fantastic partly due to the music.

Isn't power-up music exclusive to the ones that have a time limit, like the Star or Ice Flower in Galaxy? To me this seems more like a power-up that has no time limit and therefore no own music, like most others.

Considering this is more Super Mario Bros/Land than Super Mario Galaxy, I think the only timed power up we'll be seeing is the star power one.
