Capcom in Talks with Nintendo for Resident Evil: Revelations Demo on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

With demos now coming to the eShop in the November 3DS update, developers will certainly want to take advantage of this feature. One developer that's eager to support it is Capcom. The developer is currently in talks with Nintendo about getting a demo out for Resident Evil: Revelations. Unfortunately, there seems to be a slight problem regarding file size limitations.

Capcom's Chris Svensson explains:

We’re in talks with Nintendo about that and I agree, I think that would help sales a lot. For that to happen we need to get permission to use a larger filesize than demos currently are allowed.

It's also been noted that Resident Evil: Revelations will be the first 3DS game to come on a 4GB card. The maximum card size for 3DS games is 8GB, but so far Nintendo has only supplied 2GB cards.

In some other Resident Evil related news, Capcom's vice president recently revealed that there are no plans to update Resident Evil: Merchanieres 3D with the ability to use the slide-pad add-on.

Hopefully Nintendo allow big games to get demos on without a silly size limit.

I wonder what the filesize limitations are actually.

But come on Nintendo... that's in your best interest to let developers express themselves as much as possible on your platforms. There's no excuse if you refuse to let them do so...

I can imagine how the demo will be like if it goes through Nintendo. "Start demo, basic looking menu, start game, move character around, out of room, end of demo" lol Smilie

Nintendo would fit a whole game in 100MB or so though Smilie
(actualy, I think OoT3D is about 200MB)

Depends what the size is - remember big file sizes can put off a lot of users on poor connections or with data caps. (such as is fairly common in the US still).

I think capcom is competant enough to use the space well, but honestly, some games these days really dont need the space they take up. (that goes doubly for PC patchs that give you all the datafiles again rather then just whats changed).

Thats a great point. There should be a system or something where you can stream the demo instead of having to download it, bit like Onlive but on a smaller scale, why download a whole demo when A. its for a limited time and B. your going to delete it anyways to save space, so I think a system like would benefit the demo's.

The hardware has to be built around the concept for it to be possible, and I doubt the 3DS is.

Not really, streaming a game is just like streaming a video, only you need to stream the controls back.
Very low end devices can do it.

The snag is you need a good connection, and if you have a good connection, your not likely to have a problem downloading games anyway Smilie

Still, streaming demos are great as its zero effort. Would cost Nintendo a lot to do though, as its server intensive.

Maybe they should offer developers a system where the more games they sale(either retail or downloadables), the more space they get for their next game?

But then on a console like the 3DS you wouldn't be able to do it for a very long time since you would need to play constantly with Wi-Fi turned on AND you need to be constantly near a Wi-Fi access.

There's not much point doing this on a handheld like the 3DS if you have to be sitting near an access point all the time. What's the point of a streamed game on a handheld that you can't really play anywhere on the go ?

Also let's not talk about streaming huge games on a 3G connection (that would be on the PS Vita, or an hypothetical future 3DS model with 3G built-in), since that's a process that burns a lot of bandwidth... and would be too costly for the player who would therefore need to pay huge bills for his 3G access.

Well, it would be at home or at a free hotspot (depending on contry not that rare).
Youd be a fool certainly to pay for it as standard as your out and about. No one needs a game that desperately.

Speacking of Vita, Sony's limitations on that baffle me. If you have a GPRS connection, they limit your downloads to 20MB or so :? Given they arnt the ones paying for the connection, why on earth would they limit it? Seems pointless.
