Mario 3D Land Tops Japanese Charts; 3DS Sales Surge on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Mario's first 3DS outing sold an impressive 343,492 units in Japan in its first week, putting it on top of Media Crate's software charts. This figure was amazingly almost triple the total amount of 3DS software sold in the whole of October. The system itself was outselling its games by a two to one ratio.

Super Mario 3D Land pipped two new Western PS3 titles to the top spot. Sony pushed Uncharted 3 with a strong marketing campaign which saw it enter at number two, whilst EA's Battlefield 3 came in at third - both titles selling over 120,000 each. Square Enix's Final Fantasy Type-0 dropped down to number four, with Kirby's Adventure Wii completing the top five. However, another new 3DS entry came in the form of Square Enix's Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 3, which arrived at seven.

Since the 3DS price drop, the system has been selling consistently well, but it looks like Mario's latest has given a huge boost to its sales. Hardware figures for the 3DS were more than doubled from the previous week.

It actually sold better than Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.

Might keep the momentum with the upcoming releases of Monster Hunter 3G and Mario Kart 7 Smilie, two games that sell better than 3D Mario games in Japan.

I actually can't wait for this, it's gonna be great. Nice to see that it's sold quite a fair few copies already. It'll be very interesting to see how much MH3G sells, because it'll probably sell like crazy.

A 3D Mario Game selling that much in Japan is something to be happy about. Will it be able to top 1,000,000 lifetime?

I want slime mori mori!!! 2 was such a good game!

This bodes well for the future of 3DS. All it needs is good games at a steady pace, and it should be fine. Although I do have the feeling it'll do better in Japan than elsewhere.

On a non-Nintendo related note, I'm very happy for Uncharted 3 making number 2 in its first week, especially as it's a Western game. A strong marketing campaign from Sony paid off, and it's great that Japanese players have seen how good the series is. Uncharted 2's first week sales by comparison were 54,000 I believe; U3, as you can see here, did nearly 125,000.

Such a great time to be a gamer.
