Say Hello to Nintendo Letter Box 3DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Last week Nintendo gave 3DS Ambassadors a selection of GameBoy Advance games, and now will launch an interactive messaging app in time for Christmas.

This week the publisher will be release a new free app for all 3DS owners to download (regardless of Ambassador status) called Nintendo Letter Box.

The software allows 3DS owners to send virtual greetings to one another via both StreetPass and SpotPass, exchanging 2D/3D drawings, messages, photos and sound effects - the perfect time for a digitial Christmas card or two.

Messages will be recreated and animated once received according to Nintendo, presumably in a "speed-drawing" way.

Also out this week is the sublime 3DS download Mighty Switch Force! at £5.40 (€6) from Wayforward, Football Up and a demo of MotoHeroz for WiiWare. DSiWare also sees an update, adding Castle Conqueror Heroes and Commando: Steel Disaster to the digital mix.

The release has been confirmed for Europe, with similar dates expected for other regions.

I was talking to someone about this a few days ago he was like "When's it coming out?" and I was like "There's no release date yet, but I bet it will be out this Thursday". I was right. Smilie

Brilliant, have been holding out for the letter box. Can't wait!

Did people know about Nintendo Letter Box ahead of time? When was it originally announced?

A little while ago now, It was called "Swapnote" in Japan.

Spot Pass Diary is a communication tool for writing and exchanging journal entries with friends. You're free to use the program on its own just to write and store journal entries, or you can enable the system's Spot Pass and Street Pass wireless functionality to transfer entries to others.

The system uses your 3DS friend list to send out your journal entries. You can select to send to individual friends, or you can have the program do a mass send to all your friends.

I think an option to send messages to your 3DS friends is what I needed the most, :]

The software allows 3DS owners to send virtual greetings to one another via both StreetPass and SpotPass

I'm not sure. Does this include the people on your friendlist?

Yeah, I'm trying to work out if this is the messaging system we've all been crying out for. Anyone confirm? I don't quite get it.

It does include people in your friends list. Smilie

I assume it's for both anonymously and friends

So, I don't suppose you can send messages wirelessly to people that are kinda far away from you, huh?

"You make me want to play Russian Roulette with a glock. By myself."

SpotPass is via. the internet and StreetPass is local connection. So I'm guessing you can send messages to anyone on your friend's list but also send messages to... say, your brother who is in the same room as you. Kind of like PictoChat.

This is all just general assumption, but I'm sure this is how Nintendo Letter Box will work. Smilie
We'll find out on Thursday!
