With the origins of The Legend of Zelda presented as Skyward Sword, should Nintendo continue with the world above the clouds?
In the latest edition of US magazine Game Informer (via Nintendo Everything), series producer Eiji Aonuma was quizzed on whether there would be future games that used the same look and world as Skyward Sword - the short answer is, it's unlikely.
The Zelda team haven't been averse to keeping assets and art styles in sequels - Majora's Mask kept the Ocarina of Time look, and there have been numerous post-Wind Waker games that adopted the Cell-shaded art direction.
...with Wind Waker, the graphics were suited to handheld gaming. Also the game ended with Link embarking on a journey, so it left open the possibility of what comes after the game. With Skyward Sword, positioning it as the first Zelda game means everything else connects to it and comes after it. It becomes a little bit difficult to do something else within that world and certainly much more difficult to do something that comes before it.
That said, Nintendo could follow a similar art direction a with a different generation of Link, but the world of Skyloft and birds maybe left for Link's final Wii outing.
As for controls and interface, Aonuma was keen to highlight motion control as the future in a previous interview, regardless of setting and visuals.
Would you like Nintendo to produce a direct follow-up to Skyward Sword, a new generation/story with the same art-style or a completely new look?
