Nintendo Network for Future Online Play?

Last week images of the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy box suggest that Nintendo Network will soon be launched.

The upcoming Final Fantasy spinoff will be have a wad of downloadable material, and publisher Square Enix had previously noted how some of it will be paid for. The inclusion of more paid content appears to be part of what Nintendo's calling "Nintendo Network".

The company already used the title for its E3 2011 content hub, so it seems that the shift towards more online play, sharing and communication with Nintendo could be forming the basis for a more robust system than the relatively bare bones approach compared to Xbox Live and PSN.

Tad more info and full logo.

    Nintendo couldn't secure nintendonetwork.com, but nintendonetwork.net redirects to nintendo.com.

I'm pretty sure I used to visit a website called Nintendo network 10 years ago or so. Perhaps with an hyphen in the middle though, and I don't remember if it was dot com or dot net. It was related to Nintendo gaming news though, I'm sure of that much Smilie.

The E3 Nintendo site is called Nintendo Network, it's like they've been hinting at it for ages.

Also, remember this? It's in Japanese, maybe when they fully release the site it'll have a language option.

Not sure paid content is anything to get excited about.

Intergrated global friends list and the ability to jump into a game you see your friend playing was the big missing features of the Wii - both fixed for the 3DS.
Having inter-game chat I guess would be nice, but theres not many big things left to put in imho.

I still think its odd actually. The Xbox certainly started ahead of everyone else when it comes to online, but I dont think thats true anymore. I think its a perception of superiority rather then actualy being true.
Both the 3DS and Vita can pause a game, jump into a webbrowser to look something up, then jump straight back into a game. The 360 still cant do anything like that - microsoft should be embarrassed about that.

Yawn. Won't top XBL or PSN. Nintendo always late, never quite catch up what is the point? I bet this will just be the name for the DLC service. Who reckons the WiiU will use yet more friend codes? I do. Boooooring Nintendo, boooooring!

    @techiepete

Nintendo has already confirmed they will not be using friend codes on the Wii U at E3 2011, instead they will use an account based system.

Xbox live is miles ahead of what the Wii has going for it. It's not even close, really. Even the 3DS -- which is doing a lot of things right -- still doesn't provide an online experience that's quite up to par.

I think Nintendo is capable of getting a competent online system together, but if they go in thinking their current systems are nearly adequate enough already, I fear they'll aim low and deliver something substandard.

MS certainly has their own issues to workout, but I wouldn't exactly trade in XBL for an equivalent 3DS experience..the biggest problem with XBL is the lack of a web browser. And that doesn't really bother me much as web browsing on any video game system is typically a cumbersome affair.

It is kind of ironic how closed the XBOX ecosystem is though. You'd think it was an Apple product.

What specific features are missing from the 3DS then?

Inter-game chat would be nice, but I honestly cant think of much else needed :?

I have never seen a problem with friendcodes myself - nothing wrong with a number rather then a name (seeing as we can choose a proper name to link to the number anyway, its just like a phone number these days - you look up the name on your friendlist rather then type the number).

With the 3DS its clear that the codes are accounts - offline messages wouldnt work without.

The only thing needed with the WiiU I see is to support multiple accounts per console. (which is a non issue with portables imho - we rarely if ever lend the things).

Well, its more acceptable with consoles rather then things pretending to be PCs I think. (if I cant load my own code on it without a crack, its a console imho....making all iOS devices consoles Smilie)

That's kind of the most important feature for online gaming besides the actual match-making itself. Smilie I can't tell you how many times I've been playing online with friends on a Nintendo console, while having to use my cellphone at the same time to talk to them. It's incredibly antiquated.

And then the actual friends list process itself isn't very good at all. I've added many people on XBL as friends because they were friends of people I invited to the "party". This option simply doesn't exist on Nintendo consoles, and there's also no options of bringing a party with you out of one game and into another. The "party" options in general are non-existent, really.

I have never seen a problem with friendcodes myself

Well they were a complete nightmare on the DS. I don't know how anyone could think otherwise, even Nintendo recognized they were a problem. They're much better on 3DS. I still don't love that both people have to exchange numbers, instead of one entering the number and an invite being sent. But it's atleast tolerable.

I don't think it's owned by Nintendo though. Just checked WhoIs, and nintendonetwork.net is registered with Nintendo. The dot com doesn't give you anything on Nintendo.
