Earlier today in Nintendo's Investment Briefing, the company's President, Satoru Iwata revealed that a new Super Mario game is in the works, this time in 2D. The game is to be released in the next fiscal year, so any time between 1st April 2012 and 31st March 2013. No other news on the Mario game has been said so far.

After talking about some of the 3DS line up already released, and the upcoming games, Mr. Iwata mentioned this:
Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.

Nintendo also estimates there are about 200 3DS games currently in development.

Are you looking forward to a new Mario Bros. game? Do you expect Nintendo to follow the New Super Mario Bros. style?

Connectivity with the Wii U version. Do it, Moneytendo!

I think Nintendo did something quite magical with this generation/New Super Mario Bros - has the same formula as the older games, but still feels different. Wasn't a big fan of the SNES versions, so was surprised when I enjoyed both the Wii and DS editions.

Roll on a 3DS one for sure. Online co-operative in either Wii U or 3DS Mario games would be awesome!

I'd rather see a 2D Metroid personally, but I guess that's not going to happen ever again, is it :/ (With the added depth of 3D, a side-scrolling Metroid would be awesome though)

Well I bloody hope it does. It's more likely to happen on 3DS than Wii U. eShop otherwise? I certainly don't think we've seen the last of 2D Metroid.

    Oh no.
New New Super Mario Bros 50
now with every stage music being a remix of this http://youtu.be/tTgbTg55U50
every character and enemy is Blue Toad and Yellow Toad
Remix from Capcom coming next year (full price of course)
    Revolutionary new feature: tripping
However we fear 2D Mario has become FAR too complex so we have removed every other feature (like dying).

One day I will be a real life anime.

DAMN YOU JOSH!!!! I just got that song stuck in my head now >.>
Still I don't think it's as bad as that one song from Super Mario 3d Land. If their going through with this game they need much more varierty in songs tbqh.

Stop trying to sale us mario on nostalgia already!

Galaxy was great because it did something fundamentally NEW.
Lets have that again this time. 2d/3d doesn't matter, just give us a game looking forward, not back!

I would almost assume you've played the game already based on your comment. How do you know this game won't introduce something new?

On the contrary, I prefer series like these to have a balance between 2D and 3D. This is how Mario in particular will always be. Some people prefer 3D Mario, some people prefer 2D. Some like both. They'll give us a proper 3D Mario with something different on Wii U, they've given us a cross between the two in Mario 3D Land, and now we're getting a 2D Mario too. Something to please everyone.

Not sure why all the complaints, I loved the New Super Mario Bros games on DS and Wii. This is one will no doubt be even better.

I liked NSMB DS more than the Wii version, and I think as long as they add something new to the formula, and maybe make it more challenging in parts, this will be a even better.

    whahu?
I said I didnt care about 2d or 3d, did you missunderstand my post :?

I just want NEW stuff, regardless of the number of dimensions.
Mario Land 3D held zero interest to me because its biggest saleing point was its re-use of a feature of Mario3.
Unlike Galaxy which introduced things not seen before.
It wasn't about 3d vs 2D, it was about new stuff vs stuff seen before.

I want much more of "not seen before" and less of "look X is back! you liked X right??"

    --

In terms of what I like/dont like in generic terms with Mario, I'd much rather have a 2D, non-liner game with a interesting map and lots of secrets (World, Mario 3) then a 3D one thats mostly liner and little secrets at all (Galaxy2,Sunshine).

Of course what Id really really like is a 3d one with a massively interesting explorable hub full of secrets (M64), but it seems Nintendo doesn't want to make them anymore Smilie

My apologies, Darkflame. I did misread your post :] Branching and multiple pathways and secrets a la Mario 3 and Mario World are what I really want to see in 2D Mario, and the larger explorable hubs of Mario 64 and Sunshine were great too.

Haven't seen anyone mention this so I'll say it:

Please please please take a leaf from Ubisoft's book and make it a hand drawn side scroller like Rayman Origins. The art style in NSMB is far too bland, and I want to see the return of a wacky, beaqutiful art design. Let your artists off the leash Nintendo!
Ask for my 3DS Friend Code, especially if you play Mario Kart. I need more opponents!

I agree with this completely and always will. A cartoony hand-drawn Mario game would be
    amazing.
Honestly I'd just like to see a lot more games like that, the NSMB games have uninspired Mario Party-esque visuals- which is fine, harmless, fun, but it's got a competitor like Sonic Generations now which looks absolutely gorgeous as well as 'fun'.

On the Rayman Origins-type hand-draw style, it should definitely be applied to Sonic too. I've seen some moving gifs of hand-drawn Sonic sprinting, and it looks phenomenal. I'd love to see more of this style, definitely in Sonic, but Mario could look just as good too. I'd love to see some crazy designs and animations from some of the koopas, specifically the Koopa Kids - they would suit the style perfectly.
