New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a brand new sidescroller that Iwata says Nintendo are "aiming for a new 2D Mario standard with the game." Apart from noticing in the first images that the P-Wing will make a return from Super Mario Bros. 3 and a slated release date of August, no other information was shared. Hmm...Mario is golden in the second screenshot and in the third screenshot everyone except Mario is golden. Smilie New power-up for Mario and enemies as well, perhaps?

That's possible too but I find it odd that they would change it to gold from the rainbow colours and it's not just yellow koopas, the piranha plants have that colour too.

Didn't notice the yellow piranhas. There are different coloured piranha plants, but you never know, you could be right that there's more to it than that.

Same boring Mario... not interested.

Hooray! The same dull Mario experience over and over again... I have zero interest in this. We're now onto the third NSMB game and it still looks the same, with very little creative input, judging by the screens.

Luckily other developers are creating far better and creative 2D platformers, so I can get my fix elsewhere.

Im definitely getting this, dont know why you guys see it as boring?

I don't mind the NSMB set-up as such (the 8/9 worlds with various stages leading up to Bowser), but it's more of the art style that's grating on me a bit. I can understand keeping it with the 3DS though, as I'm sure the 3D itself will make up for the lack of a change in visual design - but the Wii U definitely needs to try to be a bit more experimental - perhaps hand drawn character sprites over a gorgeous painted 2D backgrounds?

It's the same old stuff again, the stages even look the same. When the first one was originally released on DS, the visuals looked ugly to me and they're still keeping that style. I just don't get it.

No ones cares though, they just buy it still. Nintendo could put out the exact same game and it'd still sell millions. It's a joke...

Hmm, do agree. Never was a big fan of the NSMB games. Don't really like the 3D models on a 2D plane, and wasn't overly fond of the floaty physics. I was thinking the other day how much I prefer the cape to the P-Wing, and now NSMB2 puts the P-Wing in there... I much prefer Mario World over all other Mario sidescrollers.

We all say a new graphics style would be ideal for not just Mario, but other games. I think Rayman Origins really changed the way 2D games should look since you can see it working with just about any series.

Looks like the same-old.
Boring visuals as always too.

..Sigh.

I bet it'll have the same old theme music that just plays throughout most of the game with tiny variations to it.

This one:

I'd rather have it on mute than subject myself to hearing this again.

It's sad where we're at a point now, where other developers are outdoing Nintendo at what made them what they are today (the days of Super Mario Bros., 2 and 3 etc). They were like the king at 2D platforming? Now, you can get a Rayman game that better than a Mario game, yes a Rayman game, Rayman Origins to be clear. This series of games is so lazily made that Miyamoto even once admitted they didn't make Peach playable because it'd take extra work to animate her dress. He was probably joking, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually true.

It's a series that appeals to the masses and they clearly never care about playing the same thing over and over (Call of Duty, FIFA etc). Because of that, this will sell millions and go onto to being one of the best selling 3DS games and Nintendo will make a tonne of money from it.

Shame it's on the 3DS. New Mario Bros multiplayer on the Wii was actually really fun for me. In single player it was boring as hell.

I can understand not doing much effort on 3DS for graphics or sound when it comes to this. Amazing (new) art styles on a tiny screen? I'm not going to listen to my favourite music through (my) phone speakers either.

This will just be a new portable mario, an expansion pack to the first new bros game on DS. It's minimal effort by Nintendo, I agree. Minimal effort and still sell 2 million of it? Probably. Not my style, but company mentality/business sense.

Let's see what the real mario brings in a few years.

For me, its not about the looks, Super Mario Bros has never been about looks, sure it has had to change from its existence but we don't play Super Mario for its looks, we play it because the games are fun and at the end of the day thats what really matters. The number 2 in the game title looks bit strange and with the golden characters its possibly a sign of something different about this game.

Looking good. After Mighty Switch Force I'm curious to see how Nintendo will make use of the 3D in this one. Still have to get 3D Land eventually though. Smilie

Nice.

Look at the Mario games on the NES, each one completely different. Different abilitys, skills and features.

Mario World 1 vs 2 on the Snes? utterly different.
Yoshi's Island played differently and looked utterly different too.

Now look at the recent 2d mario games : All look the same, and play the same by comparison.

Nintendo is being no where near as creative with these games as they used to be.

Come to think of it, the most interesting/original 2D platformer they did in recent generations I think was Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.
That had a lot of creative put into its environments and levels.

Same old boring Mario, yet again Nintendo are Dodging any real innovation and just working on the "nostalgia" nitch which has just been done to death now. I can't even begin to describe how much of an oxymoron the title of this game "NEW Super Mario 2". I won't be getting this, it'd only encourage Nintendo to not pull their finger out and keep milking it.

Wow, what a reaction... So many complaints about yet another Mario platformer.

Mario games are great!! Stop complaining and start playing! It's not like you have to buy it anyway.

I also don't like the same graphical style again, but that's the only complaint I can come up with.
We've only seen 4 screenshots and we're already tearing apart the game?

While I'm disappointed that this isn't gonna be too innovative, it's still gonna be a blast to play. I bet it'll still have that Nintendo touch, like when the enemies bop up and down to the tune of the music.

Isn't the 2 gold as well? or is that just my colour-blindness?

I don't really like the Graphical style, but the games haven't ever been the same, and there's always something new to change the gameplay, that, and they've been on 3 different consoles which means that many people may not have played the previous 2, and some will be new to the series with this.

I'm pretty mutual about the game, tbh. Part of me is a little "Meh" about the same art style, but part of me is looking forward to it, just because I had a lot of fun with NSMB and NSMB Wii.

I can still see this having quite a few new gameplay elements, but hopefully it'll have enough to set it apart from it's predecessors. Even if it's something like online leaderboards or online multiplayer/co-op.

As much as I love Nintendo, I was kinda hoping for a change of pace. Y'know, something other than a sidescroller for once. I mean, this looks nice, but maybe it's time to go in a different direction. What about, I dunno, a 3D Mario RPG game? Like the good ol' days of Super Mario RPG on the SNES.
