E3 2012 | Rumour: Will Nintendo Release a Larger 3DS? on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Rumour: Japanese newspaper Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo will be releasing a new, larger version of the 3DS hardware this summer.

The Nintendo 3DS console, slender and pocket-friendly, may just get a tad bigger with a revised model rumoured to be hitting retail this year, with a 4.3 inch screen. The larger window would measure up to be around 1.5 the current size. Whether it would boast a second circle pad is unknown.

The newspaper has been correct on various occasions prior to official announcements from Nintendo themselves.

Europe, North America and Japan could play host to the new DS as early as this summer, with a supposed announcement during Nintendo's E3 conference tomorrow.

Do you think the 3DS needs that larger upgrade or should Nintendo stick to the current model? What other changes would you like to see in the 3DS hardware - form factor, shoulder buttons?

3DS XL wouldn't come as a surprise at all.

Slightly better viewing angles for the 3D effect, to reduce the ghosting effect on some games, would be ace too Smilie.

Battery life isn't an issue for me anymore, my new battery gives me 15+ hours of gameplay with max brightness and the WiFi ON all the time, and that's not counting the good 10 hours or streetpass I do per charge.

An stick built in wouldn't be taken advantage of by developers as much because they would still need to think about those who are stuck with an older system, so I doubt they'd go that way.

Might be the easiest way to put that extra analog stick on there. Making the screen wider makes the entire chassis wider. Which in turn gives more space for the components and the addition of another stick. Hopefully a bigger battery too.

Hopefully! That'd be a big sweetener to get me onboard. Right now I can't stand the cross talk that occurs when you dare move the system even a bit.

My list of fixes before I buy a 3DS:

+ Second analog stick
+ Significantly improved battery life
+ Better viewing angles for 3D screen

If these don't happen, I might just skip out on the 3DS entirely and stick to my DS and cell phone. Atleast until Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing arrive. Then my hands are tied. Smilie

There's no way this is just a "rumor". The question isn't "IF" it's when wkll Nintendo do the inevitable?

Now will they include the second slide pad that the CPP was used for, now THAT would be a good question!

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422
