Streaming Games to Wii U GamePad Optional for Developers - Known as Off-TV Play on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Switching your gaming experience to the Wii U GamePad will be an optional feature for developers to use and may not be available with all titles.

One of the core features for Nintendo's latest living room box is flexibility in how you see your games - either on the large television in the traditional sense, or on the controller screen to free up the TV. It's a feature that Nintendo have dubbed, Off-TV Play, according to Kotaku.

Many had assumed that it would be a standard feature that could run across all titles. However, Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime did confirm that whilst the feature will be open and available to all developers to take advantage of, it won't be mandatory, and certain developers may choose to focus attention elsewhere.

He also advised that games that do support Off-TV Play will likely don some form of identification on the box - perhaps like the typical controller/online labels.

Should Off-TV Play be a mandatory feature across all titles? Would you use the feature from time to time?

Well it's good how Nintendo isn't FORCING devs to do stuff (unlike some OTHER companies) but I hope devs try hard to utilize this feature, if not then there's really no point in owning a U now is there?

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

I'm surprised that many people thought it would be a standard feature for all games. I could easily imagine a lot of games that would use the Game Pad in ways that would prevent play on only the second screen.

Developers should be given the option. Just look at how many Wii games were rubbished in media because of poor Wii remote controls. Nintendo forced all it's licensed developers to support the default controller, Wii Remote, even when these game could have done fine without.

The lack of Off TV Play will allow developers on WiiU to push higher quality graphics when needed.

Nintendo doesn't force developers to include 3D viewing for 3DS games, but I can't think of any that don't.
