Can this $99 Android Console Compete Against Wii? #1 at Nintendo Cubed3

With freely developed, mobile games ever on the rise on the Android operating system, could this new $99 console cause a dent?

A new concept, pitched at $99, involves a box that can hook up to your TV to play - with all games supposedly free. It's also proposed that the console, dubbed Ouya, be developer friendly - "built to be hacked", coupling together a developer kit and a living room set.

The hardware, whilst not in production yet, is significant as it's being designed by the chap behind One Laptop Per Child, Yves Behar. It also has backing from Julie Uhrman of IGN, Ed Fries who helped launch Microsoft's original Xbox, Muffi Ghadiali who worked with Amazon's Kindle, amongst others.

What do you think of the possibility for more Android-based devices taking on the traditional home console? Would be interested in such a device at under $100?

Couldn't I just hook my android phone up to my TV via hdmi and get a Bluetooth controller? Not sure if that's possible but I'd prefer that to having to buy a new machine just to play android games.

What's the point of this? Check out the Droid X (@ CNET), it has HDMI output and you can actually use it for more than one thing! Smilie

I wish my Ryan media streamer could do something like this. If it can stream HD video (even Bluray), it should have the power to do most 2D flash games...

Are there really any Android games that anybody has a strong desire to play on their TV?

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

I liked the Phantom's design better to be honest.

But, freedom? That would be incredible. Maybe incredibly conservative and old fashioned companies like Nintendo would adjust and you'd have an actual democratic console environment, with no artificial scarcity. All the best to them, hope they're succesful and can actually change something.

It can be a huge threat to consoles, because that's what people want, FREEDOM. all though... they might have trouble selling to fans of competitors, and to the non tech savvy gamers. it all depends on what it will be able to do.

If it has a Tegra3 chip installed, I think it's more than possible. Tegra3 can already run Lost Planet 2 in it's infancy right now, in the future on game dedicated hardware it will be able to run even better looking games. The option of using a conventional controller will open up new possibilities for developers on Android.
