Over 5 million gamers in the US have picked up a 3DS console since its launch last year, according to Nintendo.
The console hit retail in North America on March 27 2011 and despite a slow start initially, had a strong holiday season and start to 2012 - with key first-party efforts selling over a million units, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.
As of June 2012, NPD figures report over 5 million 3DS consoles have been sold in the US alone, and this is poised to grow even bigger with the impending release of New Super Mario Bros. 2 and the revised XL model.
- For june, two of the top five games and nine of the top 25 play on Nintendo systems.
- Nintendo held a 75% market share for all portable video game hardware in the US.
- Over 400,000 consoles were sold in June - spread over 155,000 3DS, 150,000 DS and 95,000 Wii consoles.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D achieved million-seller status, joining Super Mario 3D Land (2.1 million) and Mario Kart 7 (1.75 million) in the small, but growing elite.
Nintendo 3DS is entering the next phase of its life cycle with new hardware, new games and proven franchises. This milestone shows we've got a great foundation to build from.
