Nintendo Power to Cease Publication Confirmed, Digital Version Unlikely on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The iconic magazine that has followed generations of Mario, Nintendo Power, is reaching its end this year.

In the aftermath of rumours and deleted tweets this week, the House of Mario confirmed via Twitter that "the December issue of Nintendo Power magazine will be its last".

Nintendo Power is one of the longest running gaming publications to date, starting life back in July 1988 when the NES was in full force. However after 24 spectacular years of coverage, a licensing agreement with publisher Future will not be renewed.

According to Ars Technica, Nintendo have been reluctant to take the brand into the digital age by having the magazine up for download only. Staff working on the publication have already started drafting into other areas.

It's uncertain whether Nintendo themselves will eventually bring the magazine in-house once again, though with a continually strong digital presence on YouTube and Nintendo Direct, a new official magazine is unlikely.

Uuuhhhh.....1998? I think you need to recheck your year there guy, you're off by about 10 years MINIMUM. Still it's hard to believe they'll be gone....it's a sign of the Apocolips!!

It's a little sad to see it go, but I can't remember the last time I looked at one. Game magazines are kind of pointless when the internet is chock full of video game web sites.

Kind of inevitable, I suppose. I'm sure many will be disappointed. I'm a bit surprised they didn't at least try the online publishing route.

The internet needs decent micropayments, thats the problem. Adverts really cant support many staff unless you get, like IGN-level hits per day. (and look how much they spam adverts).

Its very VERY hard for traditional magazines and papers to go online. I do think people would be willing to pay something too - but only, say, 10cents, and taking that sort of money per user is impossible without it costing, like 9 cents. Payments need to be one-click too.

Its real sad. Print will die off completely in our lifetime - but atm, online cant really pay for a true replacement in terms of staff, research and manhours.

I'm completely shocked by this. I've been a subscriber to Nintendo Power since the '80s (it was my first gaming mag subscription and I have every issue so far). NP was a HUGE part of my childhood. No, my gaming life. I have so many fond memories between NP and all my friends. Especially when I was a kid. This breaks my heart. It's like losing a close friend. Smilie
