Wii U Advertising to Kick Off Next Week in the UK on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo UK Marketing and PR Director, Shelly Pearce, has revealed that a TV advertising campaign for the Wii U will be kicking off next Wednesday (October 17th) here in the UK. The campaign will feature a fresh and slightly different style, but will still keep in elements to highlight that the hardware is produced by the same company as the Wii. Nintendo also want to make it clear that it's a new console and not just an accessory for the Wii due to some confusion at trade shows from players.

The campaign launches six weeks ahead of the console's launch to makes sure there's lots of awareness before people can get their hands on them in stores. It's been said that it will have around the same budget as the Wii had for its launch advertisements.

There will also be a special sixty second advertisement during next Saturday's The X Factor on ITV1.

I'm glad they're putting enough effort into advertising this. I was afraid that after the huge popularity and hype of the Wii, they were relying on the same thing for Wii U.

I'm curious to see the route Nintendo will take with advertisements. Focusing on the off-the-TV feature would probably work best, like showing how you could use it in the car when traveling, or keep a Gamepad near your bed for light playing every now and then, that kinda thing.

..Maybe I'm being dumb but how would it work in the car?

Personally I think the most important thing is to assert that the WiiU is a new console and not just a Wii peripheral, they made the mistake of causing the general misconception that the WiiU is nothing but a special controller far too many times, it's caused a lot of confusion in the industry and I think it's really important they fix that. No one wants to buy what they think is nothing more than a glorified controller for £300.

Very true, the console housing being in every GamePad shot would help with that.

As for the car, Nintendo have already stated that the Wii U doesn't require too much power to run. What's stopping a backseat passenger from hooking up the console to the Car's lighter port and using the GamePad with it?

Ehm I don't think Nintendo wants us to play it in the car.

I think they're best off showing 3 things:

- new fun ways to play the system (for the casuals)
- hardcore games
- classic Nintendo fun (Mario etc.)

When I first saw the topic title, I thought it meant they were putting ads on the Upad screen.  Smilie

Upad ads while you play free games, could work! Smilie

When I saw the same news item on another site under a slightly different title, I thought it said "Nintendo starts advertising TVii on October 17."
Which would have meant TVii at launch... but I heard that won't happen. Smilie

Its good to see Nintendo continuing with strong marketing campaigns, i would like to see what the new agency will do for them.

Differentiation is the key point to these adverts, the target purchaser (e.g parents) need to understand the differences between this and the Wii. Something that is key if they want strong sales over Christmas!
