Gearbox CEO: Wii U "Best for Playing Hardcore", Talks SmartGlass/Vita on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford recently praised the Wii U gamepad as the "best for playing hardcore games".

Speaking to Joystiq Pitchford noted how the controller is "perfect for Aliens", with the additional functionality having the edge over other versions. He also draws comparisons with how these features can be applied to the Playstation 3/Vita or Microsoft SmartGlass, yet Nintendo's "committed themselves to this promise", and how it "wouldn't work as well with SmartGlass or with the crossplay between PS3 and Vita".

The link is direct, fast and immediate. Things like SmartGlass and Vita, they appreciate the value of the promise so they're making the promise. But they're not in with such commitment

Conceivably there's things you can do on all three without negative impact but because of Nintendo's commitment to it there are something's that could work there that just wouldn't work as well with SmartGlass or with the crossplay between PS3 and Vita.

Best out of those choices maybe - but Wiimote & Chuck for ever the best for FPS as far as I am concerned Smilie

Yeah I always liked Wiimote + nunchuck controls for Metroid Prime etc. Not as good as mouse + keyboard, but definitely better than dual stick.

I'm afraid we won't see much of it on the Wii U. Smilie

I do worry about that too - I absolutely love the Wii remote + Nunchuck in Goldeneye, works really well and gives me that edge over those dual-analogue peeps. Hoping studios incorporate it in future FPS games, but may become unlikely down the line.

wii mote can be used on the wiiU for FPS games

Cubed3 Member

Of course it can be used, but will games support it? Will they have the option?

What Nintendo needs to do is hand out the Metroid Prime 3 controls to developers. That was pretty spot on and should be used in other games.
