Video: User Accounts, Nintendo Network Explained in English on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata talked through user accounts and the Nintendo Network in a broadcast today.

During the Japanese Nintendo Direct, Iwata demonstrated how the onboard accounts system would work. As noted at E3 this year, there can be multiple users per Wii U system and when you boot up the console, it prompts you for which account to use - much like a home computer.

Each user has their own settings and save data (some maybe shared across all accounts). Users will also have their own recommendations, bookmarks and other personalised tidbits.

Up to 12 accounts will be available on the system.

Going online, players will each have their own Nintendo Network ID that requests the following details:

  • Email address, password
  • Date of Birth
  • Gender
There will a network update on launch day that will include the latest revisions for the Internet Browser, Miiverse and Nintendo eShop  applications. Downloaded Wii software, including WiiWare and Virtual Console, can then be transferred to the Wii U.

Nintendo UK have translated the presentation with English subtitles:

There are also plans to expand the service into PC and smartphone apps next year.

Good that all console accounts can play a game downloaded by one account.

Also, no friend codes at last.

Wondering if Accounts need to be added mutually first as opposed to sending friend requests (similarly to friend codes but with a username rather than a number?) Either way good news, numbers are tedious.

Also my #1 concerns were and are still with the account system's finer details

  • will 3DS adopt the ID system? (it looks like it but) I'm fed up of my brother and I both having to buy copies of the same game on eShop, if I buy Kid Icarus GB I expect my brother to be able to play it on his 3DS too, I'm not buying the same overpriced game twice for the same system (this infuriates me)
  • Will WiiU be able to have data from multiple Wiis? I have two Wiis which both have important data/WiiShop data on them, it'd be great if I could transfer both over to the WiiU so I can finally have it all in one place.
It seems possible that my issues will finally be solved.. but I won't get my hopes too high. Looking forward to hearing more details on the Nintendo website.

I think much of it is still unclear. I'm even reading the whole ID/friend code thing isn't 100% clear and that it could be that numbers are still used in some form, but ID names mask them. If Wii U links to 3DS, friend codes may still be required. Otherwise, updating the 3DS to use ID would be great. It seems you can add randomers you meet through Miiverse. I imagine they will get a notification if you add them? Or is it that you can 'follow' them, and they will get notified of that?

I doubt having multiple 3DSs would do the same as Wii U by allowing more than one account to play games that one account bought. If it's you and your brother then you have separate systems. If you could share multiple accounts onto one 3DS system or log in to a different account on a different 3DS (like I know you can on PS3), then it would work. But I'm not sure the 3DS will be updated to allow for that.

Transferring from multiple Wiis - I think that might be possible. Wonder if you could then just go transfer as much as you could from your mates' Wiis, too... lol.

Naw I'm not sure 3DS will have multiple accounts on each system but you should be able to at least have multiple (at least 1 or 2 others) 3DS' attached to the same account, the same way as PSPs (my brother's PSP, my PSP, and our PS3, are attached to the same PSN account, very handy)

I'm thinking it'll work the same way as DS transfers, one way transfer that leaves your Wii as a clean slate almost, rather than copying it over. If that were the case transferring friends' data over too would mean they effectively lose their data!

Sounds good. I never had an issue with how the Friend Codes were handled on 3DS but this sounds even better. Smilie

So is this friend codes or no friend codes?!! I read different things on differebt websites

Sent from Samsung Galaxy S3

By the sounds of things - it's looking like usernames are in, friend codes are in the background - something like that!

It looks neat. User accounts should have been brought out on the Wii though. Glad Nintendo have really thought about this, especially now practically everyone is hooked up online. Quite excited to create my first Nintendo account Smilie

So by the looks of it, your account will be tied to the e-mail and not a username? I'd prefer that, because that means I could choose whichever name I want and since I'm pretty sure there are friend requests, it should be a win win situation.
