Want to Play Wii U and under 18? Pay up 50 Cents on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo have ventured into a more open online experience with Wii U, but you'll need a credit card to register if under 18.

Parental controls can make the interaction with Miiverse a lot safer for the young ones, but according to new system adopters in the US, if players pop in a date that's under 18 years old, a credit card will be needed to verify.

Anyone could of course lie and claim that they've suddenly shot up into adulthood, however those who have the Triforce of honesty will need to charge a valid credit card with $0.50 cents.

There are warnings every step of the way, so if a rouge phallic drawing sneaks up into the Nintendo Network, tough noogies.

What? What is this? That's exactly the wrong approach to take. Parents don't want their credit card information on their young kids' systems. They don't want their kids accidentally buying something without their permission. Whether it works that or not is irrelevant; that's what parents will think and it's a reasonable concern.

Not to mention the $0.50 charge itself.

What's stopping any kid from just pretending that they're over 18 years old after they see this and find out they need their parents for it? That's what all the cool kids would do nowadays. Smilie

The best case scenario is that this parental lock system is rendered effectively useless. Maybe Nintendo will use this as demographic information and just assume that 99% of all WiiU players are actually over 18. We'll get a lot more M-Rated games Smilie

Haha, that would be hilarious. Smilie

It's a clever move on Nintendo's part, completely saving them from liability if youngsters play 18+ rated games and the parents complain; if the kid lied about their age to circumvent the fee then it's the parent's fault, and if the parent used a card on the child's behalf then they should have been more attentive. Clever. Smilie

They could do that without requiring a credit card, no?

I guess, but getting the user to use a CC gets them familiar with the process, by no means a bad thing when you think about the eShop...

D: I'm under 18, I dont want to pay for ANYTHING with a credit card, my parents don't even own one.

Yeah, they could have done the same thing by just doing an AUTHORIZATION instead of an ACTUAL CHARGE.  Just a money-making scheme under the guise of providing a service.
