Have Issues With Wii U? Ask Nintendo Tech Forums on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

New owners of the Nintendo Wii U across North America have encountered a handful of post-launch issues.

Whilst thousands have flocked to Twitter to express that they're comfortably playing Wii U, there have been a handful of players experiencing issues with the new console.

The first revolves around the firmware update required to access the online apps on the Wii U. Most players should be able to download it within an hour or two on a modest internet connection, however there have been those who have accidentally bricked their hardware by shutting it off during the download.

The impact of hundreds of users entering the new Miiverse online network also caused a handful of niggles, with slight downtime during its first twenty four hours in the public domain.

A selection of users also had issues connecting the GamePad to the console itself, failed booting, power issues and flickering status lights. An small number have also expressed distrust in Nintendo after their consoles refused to load all-together.

Nintendo of America are recommending new owners send their Wii U consoles in for repair which apparently takes at least 5-7 working days.

If you're having issues with your new Wii U, be sure to consult the Nintendo Tech forums.

My Wii U has been working great. Played both Nintendoland and New Super Mario Bros. U for a couple hours each. Haven't yet played Call of Duty.

Still unsuccessful with the day-1 update though. While I can't go online I can still play my games, so I'm not too concerned. When Wii launched it took a while to download the update too - and this update is a lot bigger at reportedly around 1 gigabyte so it's not really a surprise that Nintendo is getting hammered.

My son thought that the update froze.  So, he shut off his new Wii U.  It doesn't work.  This article says that he bricked it (whatever that means).  He spent months working a  job to save for it.  Now, the first day this happens.  Having to install something on a brand new unit is ridiculous.  Now what?  Is the unit shot?

This sort of thing was bound to happen so I can't really blame your son. My kid self might have done the same thing. It's a shame it has to brick the actual system. I mean, what if there was a power cut in your home? John, you should go to the Nintendo tech forums in the link in the news post above, and bring it up there. Sounds like you may have to send your Wii U to them, though. They'll probably do all the updating there, as well. Good luck.

The system won't turn on at all now? If he shut it off in the middle of downloading it shouldn't brick the system as the update downloads first, then installs (the same way a disconnect from the server won't ruin your system).

There is a day-one update so that Nintendo could continue working on the software all the way up to launch. Nintendo stated that they started manufacturing the system in the summer. Without a day one update Nintendo would have had to have the software completely finished by August or so. This way allows them to continue working on it for another couple of months.

This won't be the last update either. Wii U will have more updates in the future just as most other devices do (iPhones, Xboxs, Playstations, etc).

You don't actually have to install/update anything to play games, so my advice to everyone is: if you can't update, play your games and try again later.

Some purchasers I've read about had the system update download in the background whilst playing a game, us EU peeps might wanna remember that one. Smilie
