Over 400k Nintendo Wii U Sold During Debut Week

Nintendo have had a stellar week in the US market, with reports that over 400,000 Wii U consoles were sold during its debut seven days.

Consumers flocked to Nintendo hardware during the thanksgiving and Black Friday week, with 300,000 standard Wii consoles sold, plus 250,000 Nintendo 3DS and 275,000 original Nintendo DS consoles sold.

Concerns about the rise in DS numbers over the more recent 3DS were alluded to deals offered by retailers during the Black Friday period.

Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime reassured CNN that the new 3DS is continuing at a "record-setting pace", selling more than 6 million units during its first 21 months - a figure that just narrowly overtakes the original DS at the same time frame.

"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock. Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately.

Wii was a unique phenomenon. You couldn't walk into a retailer and buy a Wii until spring of 2009. We've certainly learned many lessons from that and we are replenishing retailers more quickly this time around. We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible. It's driven by consumer response.
