Japan Can Rent Dragon Quest X on Wii for Free on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Square Enix have announced plans to allow players to rent a copy of Dragon Quest X for free.

In a bid to increase more Dragon Quest X players, Square Enix has teamed up with Japanese entertainment retailer Tsutaya to be one of the first video-game rental schemes in the country.

Players will be able to rent a copy of the Wii edition for eight days, seven nights for completely free. It'll even come with a code to take the experience into the online MMORPG environment. Upon returning the game, players can then grab hold of a copy for a significant discount over the standard price - 3,800 Yen ($46/£27) instead of 6,980 Yen ($85/£52).

The game, exclusive for Wii and Wii U, already has over 400,000 subscribers in Japan alone and has yet to be released in HD on the Wii U.

What do you think of the rent-then-buy scheme for Dragon Quest X? Should similar methods be tried out in the West?

This is like when the drug dealer on the corner offers you crack free the first time. Then you're hooked, so when you go back to him he's free to start charging you.

Clever girl, Nintendo/Square Enix. Clever girl.
