PlayOn TV Launches on the Nintendo Wii U on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Internet video service PlayOn has launched their Wii U service as of December 13th.

The PlayOn service streams content from internet content sites, such as HBO Go and Hulu, to compatible devices. The capable Wii U HTML 5 internet browser can stream video to the GamePad while the user's television or monitor is in use with another program.

The cost of the service is a one-time $39.99 fee, which purchases lifetime service from PlayOn. Over 50 channels are included, including popular choices such as Hulu, Comedy Central, HBO Go, MTV, and the Food Network. In addition to streaming from the internet, PlayOn can also stream movies from your PC to your Wii U GamePad.

It looks like it's basically just pulling the free content off of those websites, but if it is convenient to use and you watch a lot of TV, I could see how that price is justified.

Also, it's probably worth mentioning that they're currently giving you a year's access to it for free. To be clear, the $40 price pays for the application for life. I guess you can could kind of think of it as a year-long trial period. The free year deal ends on December 24th.

Free for one year? Awesome, I'll sign up. This seems like a great idea. I might start watching shows on my U Pad now!!

Edit: Is this available in EU? I'll have to check the eShop tonight.

I don't watch a lot of tv, but I can't say no to a free year, maybe they'll change my mind.

I'll give it a shot, but I likely won't buy. HBO Go is bound to come to Wii U at some point (if it even works, I never got it to on my computer or my Xbox) and the other channels would be really convenient to have, but not a necessity for me.

Didn't check it myself, but I doubt it is available for us :/...

I checked the eShop, no luck.

A week ago I tried watching videos from uitzendinggemist.nl etc., these sites that offer videos if you couldn't watch them on TV. Didn't work, you needed certain codecs/extensions that aren't supported by the Wii U browser.
I'd love it if a developer picked up this idea for European services.

It's not on the eshop, it's entirely based in the WiiU's internet browser.

Aaah ok, thanks. Smilie

Edit: Huh, how does streaming from your PC to your Wii U work? Don't tell me it's all streamed through a website? o_O

I haven't watched anything yet. I did a quick check on the Cartoon Network channel to see if I could watch Adventure Time, but there are only clips, confirming what someone said earlier about how this is just a conglomeration of what's offered on these individual sites. I imagine they convert the videos somehow for Wii U watching (the Wii U's HTML 5 isn't great, I couldn't even get grooveshark to work on it) but I'm not sure. I'll probably give HBO Go a try later.

Technically, you don't need a subscription or anything to do this. As long as your videos are in MP4 format and you place them somewhere in the www folder of a web server running on your PC (you can find plenty of those, totally free), you can access them on your WiiU via the web browser just by typing the IP address of your PC, followed by the path on your www server.

Easier still is if you do it like me and connect your wii U to internet using a USB Wi-Fi dongle. By using the software called connectify, to setup your access point, you can make files on the PC used as an access point, accessible from your WiiU with a simple drag and drop. It works well. The only real problem is you need those videos to be in MP4, and most people won't have a massive library of videos or films in MP4 format... DivX and XVid are more widespread but unfortunately not supported by the web browser on the WiiU.
