Nintendo Working on Wii U VC, GamePad Play on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Kotaku is reporting that Nintendo has confirmed development of a Virtual Console for the Wii U. Reporter Jason Schreier got the info by emailing Nintendo directly. They responded, "We do not have any specifics to share at this time, however, we are moving ahead with development of Virtual Console for Wii U..."

While this news was semi-official as of November 2012, an exciting new piece of information is that Nintendo will make the Virtual Console able to play "...on the Wii U GamePad alone." The prospect of playing something like Super Metroid on the GamePad's 6.2 inch (15.75 cm) screen is an interesting one. The VC is also rumored to support GameCube games.

We think this is great news and we wonder what your most wanted Virtual Console games would be. Let us know in the comments!

I'm hoping for proper Virtual Console integration. I bought Super Metroid and Sin and Punishment on the Wii VC. I want to be able to play those games without booting up two seperate menus(Wii Menu and SD Card Menu). I also want to be able to play them on the gamepad.

If they could do that, I wouldn't mind if all they released over the next 2 years was Superman 64 and E.T.

Agreed.

Unfortunately as I've echoed elsewhere, I can't see the greedyguts' at Nintendo letting us redownload the games we already have on WiiVC for free.
I expect we'll have to buy them again.

^^ I had many titles downloaded on my Wii before I sold it off, when I got a new Wii and thought I could redownload my games again I was completely surprised that the games arent redownloadble even when you paid for them, only way is if your repay them. Nintendo are greedy like that and that has put off from buying the WiiU.

As for the VC itself, I can't imagine what the prices for games like Wind Waker, SM Sunshine etc will be.

Anything over £9.99 had better be in HD, otherwise Nintendo can jog on

I want my VC games from the wii to be a lot better integrated into the warawara plaza. In fact everything wii related should be better integrated. The wii channel is rubbish, slow to get into and it drops down to 480p even for the menu system.
New VC games should be accessible from the eshop and not have their own channel.

VC games should be playable on the gamepad (thats obvious)

I want better front screen images when you load up a VC game. Nintendo should be celebrating its heritage as fully as possible. And transferring between a fixed wii U and 3DS goes without saying.

That is not greed. Is it unfortunate? Yes. But greedy? No way.

The fact that you can't play your Wii Virtual Console games on Wii U (well, technically you can) is not "greedy" anymore than the fact you can't play NES cartridges or Gamecube discs of those games on Wii U. You can still play them perfectly fine on the system you bought them for.

I would love to see it changed as much as anyone else, but it is simply not greed.

It is greed, considering the Wii and WiiU shops could be very easily integrated I'm sure, the DSi and 3DS shops were DSi shop used the same Nintendo points as Wii's.

No other system on the market makes you pay for things multiple times like Nintendo does. If you own a Vita, PS3 or PSP, despite the generation gaps between them, you can download a PS1 game, a PSmini or some PSN games freely between the 3 so long as you own it on one of them! Because PSN is fully integrated between them.

I shouldn't have to pay for the same game twice, once I paid and downloaded it, it should be on my account and noted. Just like on PSN, all my games I have purchased I can redownload again. Nintendo straight up said no, you cant download again unless you purchased it. This is the problem with Nintendo, they sell their classic games at a ridiculous high price and if you need to redownload it again because of a System upgrade or Console failure, you have to purchase the game again? That is what you call greedy. I have been a long time loyal Nintendo fan, from NES to the Wii, I have owned it all, but this shit is ridiculous.

Yeah If Nintendo are gonna charge that amount for NES/SNES games the least they could do is update them to run on their new console properly. Feigning incompetence isn't gonna fly when they're a billion dollar company.

Nintendo isn't making anyone buy them multiple times. I've purchased all of my games exactly once and I can still play them just as well as I could when I first got them.

Methinks you missed the point somewhat.

Wanna play it on your 3DS? Gotta buy it again. Wanna play it on the WiiU Gamepad? Gotta buy it again. No other system is this anal but Nintendo's.

Either Nintendo are greedy, or their competitors are generous. Either way, Nintendo's the loser.

Actually i can see Sonic_13's argument here no one is forcing you to purchase games from the eShop...you choose to.

With that said, Nintendo should make this more appealing because it will encourage sales of these games on the consoles.

Either way it is nice to see that they are working on gamepad support for VC games. I guess for this to work they will need a seperate VC channel on the Wii U menu and launch it via that way. I would imagine it would force you to re-download the games...therefore, Nintendo not know who has bought what will charge you should you wish to this...

Therefore my i will not be transferring my Wii data to my Wii U at this time.

Absolutely idiotic though, this should have been thought about from day 1!

You missed my point. Flynnie got it though.

I totally agree that it would be awesome to buy one VC game and use it on all system. But not allowing it simply is not greed and allowing it isn't being generous.

Except Apple. Many many games are either iPad or iPhone only. Want to play the same game on the other device? You need to buy another copy.

Why did you expect to redownload them, how did you think that would be possible when games are tied to a console and not an account?.

As I've said elsewhere, Nintendo are not in the business of making people rebuy digital content they already have legal right to access. If you have console Wii VC games, and you have migrated your Wii number to Wii U, you'll be able to redownload them. Wii U VC will certainly offer the same content that is available now on Wii VC, as well as new GC content as expected.

The very suggestion that Nintendo would get customers to rebuy content which they already have legal ownership of, and a right to access at all times, is plain stupid, it would never happen/
