Disney Leaps into an Open Sandbox Infinity with New Game, Toy Playsets on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Today Disney lifted the lid on an ambitious new  multiformat project that encompasses toy figures, multiple franchise worlds and an open sandbox mode.

Whilst Mickey Mouse has been the star of Disney's gaming efforts in recent years, the House of Mouse is branching into other popular realms with Disney Infinity.

The concept invites players into a large range of game worlds - likeThe Incredibles and Pirates of the Caribbean known as "Playsets". By using toy figures that sit on a Skylanders-esque "Infinity Base", these can be transferred into a world to play themed mini-games, adventures and explore. The more Playsets you adopt, the bigger the potential becomes for some rather epic crossovers.

Aside from the main game, Dinsey also demoed the intriguing Toybox Mode, which includes a large open world to build and customise - pop in your favourite accessories, characters and vehicles from a range of Disney franchises, together with a "logic editor" for basic programming and mini-game creation.

There'll be three sets available when Disney Infinity launches this June - Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles.

Finally Disney are aiming to roll out Infinity on mobile and online devices this year, and will launch on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, 3DS and PC this June.

Looks fun - and very expensive. I find it weird that the only franchises in sight are Pixar or 3D Disney ones.. so I wonder if other Disney franchises will be added in over the months/years/until the inevitable sequel comes out. They're gonna make a killing on this..

And on the topic of making a killing, this is on 3 Nintendo platforms! Shame it skipped out the DS eh Smilie

I was kind of skeptical when I read about this yesterday. I didn't watch the trailer though. Now I have and my mind goes; "Hmmm!" I think it looks rather cool. I haven't really tried Skylanders mainly because I'm not a fan of the Diablo-type gameplay. But with this being a sandbox type game I might give it a shot. (And the possibilities of the Marvel and Star Wars characters, already with Disney and Pixar characters, I'm taking it into serious consideration.)

Yeah, this actually looks pretty cool. Disney/Pixar have some great characters, I hope WALL-E makes the cut, too.
