Rumour: New Sonic the Hedgehog Game to be Revealed February on Nintendo Wii U, 3DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Rumour: Everyone's favourite gaming hedgehog Sonic may be starring in a new game, according to sources close to SEGA.

Speaking to Sonic Stadium, the anonymous source suggests that SEGA intend to reveal a new title in the popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise - possibly on Febraury 2nd "Hedgehog Day" - but currently penned as "mid February".

Reported formats include Nintendo Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Vita, 3DS and "next generation" platforms.

The console version is said to feature similar gameplay to Sonic Unleashed, Colours and Generations with a blend of 3D sections and classic platforming segment. Multiple routes are said to be in place, but with exits scattered around - linking to different levels depending on which route you take. The final stage and boss is said to be the same regardless.

In terms of characters, the source suggests at "about 10 different characters" would be available from the existing Sonic the Hedgehog universe, unlocked through levels. Specific abilities would also be in place, allowing shortcuts for certain characters and impossible routes for others.

The Nintendo 3DS version is said to be similar to the console edition, but taking on a Sonic Rush style approach with fewer stages.

SEGA have yet to comment on the rumours or officially confirm a new Sonic the Hedgehog game. Whatever the case, a new title for the world's fastest hedgehog is a certainty at somepoint.

What do you think of the rumour? Is this setup the right step for iconic SEGA mascot?

Moving on to the 3DS version, the source says it will be "similar in idea, but smaller in scope".

See now, for the 3DS version, they should just make it a true 2D game. It has the sounds of a Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with the three characters reaching different parts of the stages. But I don't like the 2.5D thing going on these days, so would much prefer proper 2D sprites. The branching paths does sound like a typical Sonic thing to do, though; quite surprised it's not been done before. Sonic CD is about the only one that comes close.

Still, will have to wait and see what comes of this. I think Sonic Generations was the best thing SEGA have done with Sonic for years, and even then I wasn't fond of the 3D levels. I think if I'm gonna come back to Sonic in the future, it has to be for 2D old-school Sonic.

Well seeing as the Colors formula was phenomenal, I'm excited. The day levels in Unleashed and the Sonic levels (Classic and modern, but just the Sonic levels. I hated the challenges with other characters.) were awesome. Sonic has been on an awesome rise, in my opinion, as of lately. Smilie

I'm not too fussed as long as they include at least Tails and Knuckles as playable characters - how long has it been now since they've been playable in their regular roles?

Tails to fly, Knuckles to glide, climb and smash shit up. Sonic to double jump and use power-ups in different ways.

I doubt SEGA would go all the way back to side-scrolling only, so I think the Unleashed/Colours setup is the idea format. Just want more characters, solid number of levels and decent replay value - needs online races, leaderboards, challenges. Bring it on SEGA, bring it on...

February the second is GROUNDHOG DAY, not "Hedgehog Day".

Yes, but SEGA have used it to call it their own "Hedgehog Day"...
