Zelda: The Wind Waker Wii U vs GameCube Comparision Screens on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Which version of the The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker do you prefer - the Nintendo Wii U remake or the original GameCube version?

Earlier today Nintendo confirmed a stunning high definition version of the GameCube classic for release later this year.

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on Wii U boasts a slightly different direction in terms of shading; deeper shadows, stronger contrasts and a brighter world that's perhaps more in line with Nintendo games in the last few years.

The original 2002/2003 release is known for a strong cell-shaded and block colour appeal which looks fairly different in the Wii U remake.  IGN whipped up some comparison screenshots using the Dolphin emulator to get a like for like comparison of both versions - and we've plopped them side by side.

Even though I personally prefer the old style quite a lot more, I do want to give credit to Nintendo for actually changing it and actually making a proper remake. They could have just gone the easy and quick route by making a simple port that's upscaled with some small enhancements, like other HD collections. Instead they're actually putting more work into it. So that's a good thing.

That said, my opinion is, the new art direction looks less unique and more of a standard looking game. It's not cel shaded anymore and the cool tint and sour colours aren't appealing too me. There's also the bloom, which I feel is uneeded too.

I prefer the landscapes of the remake but the character models of the old. They don't look right in the remake, in my opinion. I would think they should look like how Toon Link does in Brawl. (Nonetheless I'm picking it up.)

Not sure I like how much brighter the game looks in the new screenshots... or is it perhaps that those Gamecube ones are darker than they should be?

Anyway, I'm so buying this either way Smilie. Beyond the visual makeover, I hope for improved inventory management via the Gamepad, in the same vein as what they did on OoT3D.

I think it maybe a case of that Nintendo brightness - looks great but maybe a little too bright. I get that feeling from Nintendo Land - where it's like Nintendo only just discovered lighting of that sort and just plopped in into Zelda?

That said, the deeper shadows and contrast looks great imo - I'm sure it'll be even neater in action. Definitely can't wait, this year as well.

I agree with Marzy about the fact that is actually a remake, not just a higher resolution version. This too allows for actual change to the game itself and have it fit well, not just tacked on. I do quite like the overly bright new visuals, but they seem to be very early. We've only seen two character models so far. I expect them to change soon.

this announcement made me cry manly tears. I love this game so much! What i really wanted was a proper full blown sequel (not that ds crap) but you know what. This is good enough for me.

The old is more charming in a naive way. The new version could look better in motion with it's realtime lighting.  It's clouds could and should be fluffier though.

For me what made ww was the animation. That's what gave it its cartoon stylings. No doubt ww reborns Animation will be second to non. This is gonna look amazing in motion. Just as with ww I dnt think screen shots do this game justice

I think it looks amazing and I can't wait to see it in motion at this year's E3. I do hope they show some 3DS Zelda though, information on that needs to come this year. Even if it's just a handful of screenshots or something!

Either way, I can't wait for a gameplay trailer of this to see it in motion. Smilie

I played around with one of the images in Photoshop and made it how I'd prefer it too look like.

Still can't get rid of that bloom though. Smilie

Some bloom is nice, just they went ott with it.  The overall contrast was just too much.

I like your version a lot better.

There's still plenty of development time yet. Come E3 we'll have a better idea of the final product. Whatever, I'm beyond happy - for me, the original was the best console game of all time. Hope they don't mess around with the music too much.

The new art style looks amazing. I was so excited when this was announced.

Its not the appearance I'm mainly upset about its the gameplay changes I'm not liking. if they wanted to do a remake they should have gone with an older game, and I really think they should avoid changing the LoZ formula. I was hoping for either a Majora's Mask remake, or A Link to the Past remake even. Not Wind Waker, that game was perfect the way i see it, it didn't need a remake.

The original Wind Waker had such an amazing look and feel that is totally lacking in the new version.  To me, the unique animation and graphics, which was very cinematic, were the best aspect of this game.
