No Dual GamePads for Wii U Virtual Console - Controller Assignment Only

No Dual GamePads for Wii U Virtual Console - Controller Assignment Only on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Images of control schemes in the Nintendo Wii U virtual console service claiming dual GamePad support have been misinterpreted.

A photo that's been doing the Internet rounds today shows one of the options available to Nintendo Wii U Virtual Console players. Rather than adding a second Wii U GamePad to the mix as suggested in some reports, the option shown gives players the ability to change which player number the current GamePad is hooked up to.

We tested this in our downloaded copy of Balloon Flight (NES), where if playing two player using on a Wii Remote, the GamePad would need to be re-assigned to second player in order to let Wii Remote join in due to syncing issues (see image below).

The Wii Remote defaults to player one, so the GamePad has to be shifted onto player two in order to play.

Likewise if playing a Nintendo 64 game in the future, the GamePad user might be assigned to one of the four ports available. This screen would allow another player who is using a Wii U Pro or Classic Controller Pro to become first player and the GamePad user to switch.

Those with Wii Remote Pro controllers are unaffected as these automatically sync into second player.

We know that Nintendo is planning to eventually roll out the ability to use more than one GamePad per console at the same time, so this could change in a future update.

I discovered this last night while trying to figure out how to play Balloon Fight in multiplayer! I thought it would be bizarre if you needed 3 controllers just to play two player, it wasn't as obvious as it should be :C

Definitely confusing - because the Wii Remote can't be set to player two (by the looks of things), you have to force the GamePad into second player by bringing up the menu and tapping on that icon.

I thought to clarify as a few reports were going round claiming dual GamePad support from this menu which isn't true (at the moment).

Does anyone else really not see a need for dual gamepads, it sounds expensive, complicated and unnecessary.

Seems like Nintendo think so too, until a game comes along that uses the gimmick really well.

Crystal Chronicles maybe? Hahaha.

I was one of those people who, before Wii U released, dreaded the fact that only only one GamePad would work with Wii U. I know two are confirmed, but now that I have a Wii U I really don't see the need of two.

I'd like to be able to play my VC fighting games in Vs via two Gamepads.

I was the same, I was worried that it was going to create so so many lost opportunities, but now I think it's not really needed..

I'm in agreement, I'd only see the relevance of multiple Gamepads if the screens were smaller - say the size of the original DS Lite screen or perhaps 3DS, wedged inbetween a Wii U Pro controller.

Still finding it shocking how a fair few websites are still reporting this as multiple GamePads for Wii U virtual console, when it's not...

Madden is a huge one.

Four Swords Adventure would be sweet.

Many games could use it well.

I don't really care about madden. Four Swords and Crystal Chronicles would be good but I don't really see an issue with one person using the gamepad and another using the tv. When I look back all four swords and crystal chronicles did was use the extra screen for menu management and some average mini games.

Plus those games died at retail because no one had 4 cables and 4 gbas. Hardly anyone would buy a second gamepad, so you'd be dooming those games again. With Crystal Chronicles, they should make it 3 player(2 on the tv and one on the gamepad) and include online multiplayer for up to 6 players.
