Nintendo Wii U Version of Tomb Raider in Doubt

Nintendo Wii U Version of Tomb Raider in Doubt on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Comments from Crystal Dynamics' creative director Noah Hughes has suggested a "no" to a Wii U version of Tomb Raider.

Speaking to True Gaming in a video segment, Hughes praised Nintendo's efforts with "new interfaces" and that it's "fun to play" with these unique control schemes, but shied away from a Wii U version of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

Having said that, it's something that I think we would want to tailor the experience to if we were going to do it, and currently we're offering it on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, and all three of those are really trying to deliver roughly the same experience but delivered best on each platform.

I think something like the Wii U often asks you to do something unique, based on a unique interface so that's something as a gamer I love but it's something that you don't want to do half-heartedly as a developer.

What do you think about these comments? Should the need to push the design further on Wii U prevent third parties from adding Nintendo to the list?

This was one of the very few games I thought had a chance at coming to Wii U, but it honestly doesn't surprise me. Just seems like devs really don't want to risk the time and effort that would equate into poor sales on Wii U. But the GamePad excuse isn't a good one. I'd have more respect if they were honest about things. They could get another developer to handle the port, like Straight Right did with Mass Effect 3, but again, moneys, I guess. Although Straight Right are working on another Square Enix-published Wii U port, but this news rules out Tomb Raider, so it'll be something like Deus Ex, Sleeping Dogs or Hitman Absolution.

Yet another studio using this lame excuse. It was a valid one for the Wii, since its main controller was lacking in inputs on top of much weaker hardware but the GamePad has the exact same amount of buttons, so this reason is just laughable. Why are they still using one like that, anyway? Just say that a lack of resources or time was the reason, even if the real one was the Wii U being a new console with a much lower install base. Gearbox is guilty of doing this too, unfortunately.

It'll be interesting to see how things will go when the next Xbox and Playstation arrive, starting at zero while the Wii U had a considerable headstart. Will third parties go back to the hardware power excuse or stick to this one which they're using right now?

so its their way of saying "we're too fucking lazy"

fudi (guest) 28.01.2013#4

so their saying that they're too lazy too make a wii u version?

Honestly is developers for WiiU (and heck Vita too) just said "it isn't financially viable at the current time" then everyone would understand and the companies in charge of support would make more of an effort to change that.

The whole "We would wanna do something unique on that system..!" PR crap is really inane.
But.. PR is PR.

Did they forget that the WiiU has a classic controller too? So while they are scratching their heads trying to find something "unique" to do with the controller on future games, let the people play the games made now with the classic controller.

My god, some developers are being a bunch of babies! I thought it was all about pushing the envelope and upping the anti with new and exciting technology for the gamer. This is just an indication of utter stupidity, and makes the average gamer think what a bunch of babies!

Nope, its not a lazy thing.  I'm sure its about money and that the Wii U just isn't viable yet for most game makers.  I have a Wii U but I only own it for the Nintendo only games such as Zelda, Mario Kart, etc.  Any other game that comes out I put on my Xbox even if it is out on Wii U.  Most Wii U owners are like me in that respect and developers are starting to recognize that.

Meh...I bought a Wii U for the Nintendo games like Mario, Zelda, etc.  If I want to play something else I'll put it on my Xbox, so no biggie.

Why? I get with the original Wii the Xbox has some advanatages for multiplatform releases (online, better graphics)....but why the Xbox preferance with WiiU?

Because the majority of multiplat games run better on 360 than any other console, including Wii U, perhaps? Guaranteed variety of online players. More friends to play co-op with. Cheaper to buy. There's plenty of reasons to stick with multiplat games on 360, or PS3/PC, over Wii U.

On topic, Chad speaks truth. It's not just about being lazy. It's about costs and efforts and big inconveniences that may not be worth the end sales. Just wish they'd be more honest that that is the reason. Spending £30 extra for the U classic controller is an inconvenience for consumers, too, though. But the GamePad does do the same job, so it's a bit odd.

This is just lazy in my opinion.  I understand that they want something unique for the Wii U, but They could have brought it over to the wii U as a straight port- and just given the ability to play just on the Gamepad<--this is priceless for me in my household with my wife wanting to use the TV at the same time as I am playing games.  I think that developers/publishers are greatly overlooking the ability to play directly on the gamepad, they would rather shoehorn strange functions into a  game just to offer a "unique" experience.  Being able to move around within my house and play a game is pretty unique to me!

Or it could actually be what he said, and like with Ninja Gaiden, the Wii U will get a much better game.

Let me just:

"Having said that, it's something that I think we would want to tailor the experience to if we were going to do it, and currently we're offering it on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, and all three of those are really trying to deliver roughly the same experience but delivered best on each platform."

Ah I see, that makes sense. So you would, justifiably, want to "tailor the experience" to wii U and that's a problem because you are "trying to deliver roughly the same exprience" on all platforms.

Crucially though you do, of course, want it to be "delivered best on each platform"

It's crucial to play to a platforms strengths isn't it, to: "tailor the experience".

Perhaps instead of PR bullshit a bit of honesty might go along way, I'm not trying to be facetious or anything, really.

I mean what I say and I say it earnestly. I'm sure we would totally understand and respect your honesty, really, people like honesty and can be quite fair.

But they don't, understandably, like weaselly little brown-nosing PR maggots.

It's a damn good thing then that nintendo fanboys are smart and can remember the last tomb raider reboot and have as little interest in the latest tomb raider reboot as the last shit tomb raider reboot. Oh wait.

Well at least they aren't hyped for that pile of wank: the last of us. By that shit developer that made those shit uncharted games.

Oh wait.

Is it time? Is it time for me? Is all hope lost then?

being jealous of tomb raider 2 back in the day is one thing, but i never thought I'd see the day when nintendo fans were jealous of a fancy FMV of another crap tomb raider game just because it was shown during the (of all things) sony conference.

Perhaps I'm wrong but I've seen a lot of fancy FMV sequences in my time many of them during sony conferences.

I mean I don't even know how to explain this if it isn't already clear. Another crap tomb raider reboot? Another misleading sony conference with a hype trailer of another casual game?

It's time, all hope is lost. No more videogames for me then.

I'll just go back to shadowrun then thanks, you don't know shadowrun? Well don't fucking ask me, I haven't got all that much say anymore. I'm just about finished.

EDIT: fucked the quote up. fixed it.
