Etrian Odyssey IV Releasing February 26th in North America on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Atlus' fourth entry in the Etrian Odyssey series will be releasing in North America on Nintendo 3DS on February 26th, 2013. A demo will be up for download prior to its release, on February 7th.

Etrian Odyssey IV tells the tale of the ancient tree of Yggdrasil which lies on the horizon of the city of Tharsis, and whose roots lie in a far-off land that none have explored. Seeking fame and fortune, you come to Tharsis to discover the secrets of the tree's roots, and set off in your skyship, hoping for treasure, glory and answers.

Using the 3DS' touch screen, players can draw their own maps to work their way through dungeons, and deep character creation and party customisation means players are rewarded greatly for their creativity and experimentation, with choices they make having an important role.

An improved graphics engine with 3D polygonal enemy models and new special effects has been implemented. Customisable skyships that let players fly and battle in the skies are upgradeable; dungeons have been expanded over previous games, with analogue camera control incorporated; StreetPass functions for guild cards and character trading is featured; and an orchestrated soundtrack from Yuzo Koshiro has been written for Etrian Odyssey IV.

You know, I tried really hard to get into this series. I was certain I would love them because it contains so many elements of RPGs that I know and love. I was able to play the first two games without buying them, and they just fell completely flat for some reason.

Maybe I've just played way too many "good" JRPGs, and now I only have time for the "great" ones. I'll definitely be trying the demo, though.

I got so into the 1st one, it drove me nuts. It was god damn hard. I was returning to the base every half a map...! It goes into that famous domain of tedious and fiddley yet stupidly addicting old RPG, addiction further exacerbated by the self-help map drawing on the bottom screen. It reminds me of the ooomph I used to feel playing Wizardry in its early days, plotting a map on paper.

Do any of you plan on going up into the international space station and be the only man up there for a couple of years? Then I heartily recommend this. In fact, get the whole series before you get launched. Not for the faint hearted. So is being alone in space.

So I played the demo. The first time I was completely turned off and hated it. Having to start off creating my profile and forming an entire party while learning all the mechanics was just a boring nightmare.

I tried it again a few days later and got COMPELTELY hooked. I beat the first mission and started exploring the overworld, getting into the second dungeon, when I suddenly remembered that I was playing a demo and not a full game. You can do a LOT in this demo.

The gameplay is very "hardcore" in that it's not for casual, pick-up-and-play gamers, but it's really addicting. I might have to pick this up eventually.

^ In case you didn't know, you can carry your progress made in the demo to the actual game, which is probably one reason it's such a big demo.
