Out of all of Nintendo's games franchises the Zelda (and Metroid) games have always stood out with their darker edge. For me that's always what's made The Legend of Zelda something to look forward to in amongst the sea of brightly coloured games. Don't get me wrong, I love Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi & all the rest, but I like variety. I want to give my eyes a rest sometimes from all those primary colours and simple shapes. The Zelda games have always been the franchise to take things in a different direction visually and thematically and add that much needed variety to Nintendo's games line up.
When The Wind Waker arrived on the Gamecube I was one of the people who was disappointed with how it looked, but I bought it anyway because it was The Legend of Zelda! It's still going to be good, and it was good. But still to this day I wish they hadn't chosen that visual style. Don't get me wrong, it's a gorgeous game and I can't fault it on how it looks. It just doesn't feel suited to the Zelda franchise to me. If Nintendo make an HD Zelda game that turns out to be a toon shaded game I will be beyond disappointed. Everything else is like a cartoon! Leave Zelda alone and make it a serious, dark, epic adventure that stands out from everything else they do. For me Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess are the best games in the series. This isn't just because they are good games, it's also because the art style gives you a sense of foreboding, a feeling that there's something scary around the corner and a dark presence hanging over everything.
I want detail and I want a dark "realism" to my Zelda games. I sold my copy of The Wind Waker last year, it's the only Zelda game I've ever sold. As good as it was it just couldn't deliver what I wanted and I only ever played it once.
