Nintendo Could Do More Cell-Shaded Zelda in the Future on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

In an interview with the father of Super Mario Brios. and The Legend of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto, he teased that cell-shaded Zelda could return.

With Nintendo revisiting The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in a high-definition Wii U port set for release this October, some fans have wondered if the cell-shaded look would set a precedent for the upcoming titles in the series.

Well, we've prepared The Wind Waker HD for Wii U, and because we've done this and brought the toon-shading of that game to Wii U, there's a chance that we may use that toon-shading again with something else.

Would you like to see Nintendo continue the cell-shaded, toon world of The Legend of Zelda in a future title?

I would have been more interested had they not remade Wind Waker into an HD version as now any HD Toon Link in a new game won't have the same "wow, this is truly beautiful" effect.

Then again, I don't plan on getting Wind Waker HD so it would.

I'm into the more realistic approach to Link in the Zelda games, but Windwaker is a game with non-aging-graphics and I liked they graphics back in the days - I was one of the few defending it over and over again. Other games from that era look way outdated by today's standards. See Geist or some other GC games.

I think Myiamoto-san meant something other then Zelda games - it reads that way to me.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

The HD TWW isnt really Tone shaded though. Its not flat- theres gradients.

Not that its a bad style as such, but its the wrong direction really. Id have loved them to try to reproduce the concept art style. Flat, but "textured". That would have been fantastic.

And I still want a mixed-style zelda game. Lets have each area a different art-style!

Out of all of Nintendo's games franchises the Zelda (and Metroid) games have always stood out with their darker edge. For me that's always what's made The Legend of Zelda something to look forward to in amongst the sea of brightly coloured games. Don't get me wrong, I love Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi & all the rest, but I like variety. I want to give my eyes a rest sometimes from all those primary colours and simple shapes. The Zelda games have always been the franchise to take things in a different direction visually and thematically and add that much needed variety to Nintendo's games line up.

When The Wind Waker arrived on the Gamecube I was one of the people who was disappointed with how it looked, but I bought it anyway because it was The Legend of Zelda! It's still going to be good, and it was good. But still to this day I wish they hadn't chosen that visual style. Don't get me wrong, it's a gorgeous game and I can't fault it on how it looks. It just doesn't feel suited to the Zelda franchise to me. If Nintendo make an HD Zelda game that turns out to be a toon shaded game I will be beyond disappointed. Everything else is like a cartoon! Leave Zelda alone and make it a serious, dark, epic adventure that stands out from everything else they do. For me Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess are the best games in the series. This isn't just because they are good games, it's also because the art style gives you a sense of foreboding, a feeling that there's something scary around the corner and a dark presence hanging over everything.

I want detail and I want a dark "realism" to my Zelda games. I sold my copy of The Wind Waker last year, it's the only Zelda game I've ever sold. As good as it was it just couldn't deliver what I wanted and I only ever played it once.

Hope they use it again but not for zelda. I personally think that windwaker artstyle is suited to pokemon. Make it happen Nintendo

Trepe - While I agree with your choice of best Zeldas, you shouldn't link style to mood so sharply. Its very possible to get dark forboddingness with cell shading. Its more a mater of colors then realism.
Okami had a much darker tone then TWW and aged just as well visually. It had its vright pretty areas, but also dark/twisted looking too.
Some of the strongest emotions you can get cisually I'd say comes from high-contrast and low saturation in fact -  sillottes and such.  Imagine almost a "sin city" style look to some areas.
The best darkness lies in contrast with light, imho.

In absence of light, darkness prevails? *grin*

I think the art style never did any bad to Link, meaning toon shading, cel shading or whatever you call it, is not bad for Link per se, but Link being that young and... well... a bit chubby was not for me. But they made all fit together: he's afraid like a kid, he sneaks like a kid, he has missions and quests like a kid in the beginning building up to the usual 'save Hyrule, you're the Chosen One'.
That's why the art style and the game both are fantastic and have to be seen as one.

I am glad, thou, they did the approach with a more adult Link in later games and I liked the adult part in Ocarina of Time.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!
