Nintendo Could Return to Super Mario Galaxy Series in the Future on Wii U

Nintendo Could Return to Super Mario Galaxy Series in the Future on Wii U on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo hasn't ruled out a return to the much loved 3D platforming series, Super Mario Galaxy.

With the team at Nintendo venturing to a more linear design in Super Mario 3D Land and continuing the trend with Super Mario 3D World, the father of all things Mario - Shigeru Miyamoto - has explained the decision.

The main reason for Super Mario 3D World, instead of what many expected to be something more line with Super Mario Galaxy, is due to the accessibility of the New Super Mario Bros. series. Nintendo wanted to extend the broader appeal of the 3D Mario game "that a wider array of people could play", Miyamoto said. "That's what we chose for Super Mario 3D World this time".

For those craving a more solo, open experience, "there's a possibility that in the future we may look to explore what else we can do with the Galaxy series", Miyamoto confirmed.

Would you like to see a game that's more like a potential Super Mario Galaxy 3?

I'd want a new game similar to Sunshine rather than Galaxy. Sunshine had a beautifully realized island to explore whereas Galaxy was just random space debris. :/

God forbid we have a proper new game >_<
WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH NINTENDO.

Gravity mechnics are awesome - keep them, add them to all mario stuff.
But I dont just want a new Galaxy exactly how I dont just want a new Mario World, new Land or new New.

Mario64 gave us 3D and a castle to explore - big deals. game changing.
Sunshine, despite its flaws, gave us the flood - a game mechanic that changed the whole game.
Galaxy introduced non-linear gravity - another game mechcanic that effected the whole game.

Cant we have something else as new and interesting? something that isn't just a minor new item, but a big game-change gimick?

Make a mario game that I am curious about - that makes me think "wow, thats cool....whats it like to play with that".  I'll buy a WiiU for that.

I'd rather they use Galaxy as an inspiration to make something new, hopefully another oldschool collectathon. It's always great to see Mario moving forward, but people loved Galaxy 1 and 2 because they were full of new ideas. It wouldn't be new anymore if they made Galaxy 3.

Make another expansive explorable game like 64 and Sunshine with some of Galaxy's tighter platforming elements, there's so much potential.

That's a stupid comment. Don't listen to your typically fickle fans this time, Nintendo. You did brilliantly with the Super Mario Galaxy series, and I have faith in your judgement on this particular one.

Dude yuor totally awesome. And i won't be killing you anytime soon.

So Nintendo are basically restricting 3D Mario's future to a Galaxy game (which they've already beaten the horse dead, IMO) or a 3D -insert alternate name for earth, ground here game.

This genuinely makes me sad.

SMB1, SMB2, SMB3, World. You know what they are? The original 2D Mario's. The great ones, the flawless ones, the ones that people will remember for bringing something new every time.
NSMB, NSMB Wii, NSMB2, NSMBU. You know what they are? The generic 2D Mario's. The games that are the exact same thing every time bar a new set of levels.

Now the cycle has begun with 3D Mario. They're literally turning it into the 2D style, generic feel included.

SM64, SMS, SMG, SMG2 - The original 3D Mario's. The great ones, the flawless ones, the ones that people will remember for bringing something new every time.
SM3DL, SM3DW, onwards - The generic 3D Mario's. The games that are the exact same thing every time bar a new set of levels.

Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it. Why are they generic? Because it's Nintendo's way of screwing up 3D Mario, just as they did with 2D Mario, turning it into a New Super Mario Bros. 3D series, essentially. I believe when people say they want another Galaxy game, what they really mean is to say "not another 3D Land".

Because money is a bigger influence than fan loyalty. Mario's getting a whole lot cheaper and cheaper with every installment, but Nintendo's making more money from it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater. I have EVERY Mario platformer thus far. I will get 3D World and every game that follows it. But come on, is it really that hard to listen to the fans for even a SINGLE GAME?
That's all the Mario fans want. Nintendo to listen to them for once. Then they'll accept how the other Mario games are because they just got the best game they'll ever play.

For years, people have been wanting Nintendo to create a free-roaming, open world 3D Mario. If anything, people wanted this just to counter the generic-ness of the NSMB games. I am one of these people. I still think Super Mario 64 is the best game in the Mario series as it brought the most new content to any Mario game in history. I'm annoyed how 3D Land was basically NSMB on a 3D plane. And 3D World looks pretty much identical. I would love to see a Mario when you have the freedom to play around in a sandbox.

I'm not talking about Mario 64, I'd like to see a colossal Mushroom Kingdom, that isn't divided into small factions that you're given a Time Limit to complete. I want to BE FREE. I want to collect stuff again, and I want that stuff to have a valid purpose, unlike Star Coins. I want Bosses that don't require three stomps to the head to defeat. I want a story that gives the gameplay purpose. I want originality. Just once, please.

Am I really asking for too much?

Honestly I thinke they just needed to crank out a quick 3d mario because of how bad the wii u's doing atm, although it still looks incredibly fun especially with co op. I'd like something like galaxy but more open world and less linear.

Completely misread what I was saying as I love the Galaxy games but whatever...Smilie

All I'm asking for is similar to Superlink. A new game that can be it's own thing rather than yet another galaxy game which will get stale if constantly repeated.

No I want to stick up for ifrit it's not a stupid comment. The control scheme and camera and everything was perfect from sunshine. the non-fludd sections show this perfectly.

It doesn't have to be on delfino island or whatever (maybe a different bigger island?) and i don't think thats what he was saying: that they should just remake sunshine.

i know sunshine is supposed to have its issues and some people don't like it but i thought it was brilliant.

i don't want galaxy controls or new smb controls. i want sunshine controls.

They were perfect. Sunshine get's too much stick.

galaxy wasn't that great (blasphemy!).

the gravity was just for noobs so you couldn't die: trolling

"i don't want galaxy controls or new smb controls. i want sunshine controls."

Hu? The controls are the same :?
They just added shake to spin.

Galaxy's controls were sublime.

I'd say, the only inoffensive and helpful use of waggle on the Wii, haha.

Galaxy's only control problem was the lack of camera control. Sometimes I got sooo frustrated with it so a return to a dual stick 3D mario like in Sunshine would be welcome.

Guess we'll be waiting a while for the next big solo 3D mario adventure. D:

I have no doubt that Mario 3D World will be fantastic as a solo game as well as a multiplayer game.

It's being made by the same team as Galaxy afterall, not just people from the 3D Land team. It's gonna have some brilliantly creative platforming in it.

I am a little bothered by Nintendo's lack of creativity with this one. They tend to say that they don't want to create new games unless there new elements/innovations they can do with the series (ala the reason why we havent had a new Starfox/Fzero) but yet this is going to feel like a multiplayer version of Super Mario 3D Land 3DS.

It is a major disappointment for me as SM64,SMS. SMG's were great games and console defining (look at their review scores) , very gutted that Ninty havent done much since SMG2 to develop some ideas for a proper 3D Mario platformer.

I don't want to see another Galaxy, i want something more original...something that will define the console quite like SM64.

I personally don't think there's much reason to believe that Mario 3D World won't be that game.

Multiplayer doesn't cheapify a game, guys.
This is being made by the same genius team behind Galaxy and older 3D Marios, just because it has a similar image to 3D Land doesn't ruin its chances of being something sublime.

Ya'll are jumping to too many conclusions.

I don't think it will be that game personally. I am not saying Super Mario 3D Land is a bad game, in fact i quite like it.....but its not what we wanted...

I didn't like it at all, but this is made by the Galaxy team, not the 3D Land team. I have no doubts that it'll be of the utmost quality.

And what do you mean by "not what we wanted"? Do you claim to speak for every Mario fan?
The game looks fantastic, I don't understand this negative assumption at all.

I think it will still eeep with Nintendo greatness and magic, and don't get me wrong, it will be sublime and still get the high reviews from all games reviewers, and more importantly put a few coins into the Bank of Mario but I really get the feeling from the majority of people on here (including myself) were looking for a bit more of an open-world game like the predecessors aformentioned in my last post.

It's not so much the negative assumptions, its more the disappointment that when Iwata mentioned a new 3D Mario I was automatically thought a successor to 'Galaxy'....not 'Super Mario 3D Land'.

I will still buy it...I am a sucker for Nintendo games after all... just a little upset thats all

I understand the want for something with more exploration, but I wouldn't give up hope that it can happen again. 3D Mario has absolutely never been short on innovation even throughout all of Nintendo's weird image transitions, I don't expect that to stop. There will be more different kinds of 3D Mario in the future, I really wanted something with more exploration too, but I'm not gonna shake this for what it isn't because it still looks fantastic and I'm sure for many it will be. Smilie

Plus, it's nice for Nintendo to expand on something different. Sunshine expanded on 64's ideas, Galaxy 2 on Galaxy's, and this looks like it'll expand on 3D Land so much that it won't even be recognisable anymore.

God, mario galaxy was THE best platformer i had ever played. This next mario looks to be the most dissapointing ever.. no life bar, no stars, and i swear to god if they use a stage select for a CONSOLE mario game im gonna be pissed. 3d land was great for a handheld, but console!? I dont want power suits, or shrinking mario with no hat in a console mario game. God, i love nintendo and i know they have the best and most innovative games out there, but ever since they started rehashing New super mario bros i feel like they think they can get away with it. 3d land was a game specifically tailored and used to show off the 3ds' capabilities, so why the hell they would waste the opportunity to showoff the the wii u's capabilities with a brand new, unique mario is beyond me. Also i dont understand why they use the "3D" title again.. not like the wii u has 3d capability and its not the mid 90's anymore. Whats the point? It was a horrible idea and i hope they try again

they should do it, i loved the galaxy series and they should continue it.

Well on the contrary the Wii U could potentially output to stereoscopic 3D...although i don't think Ninty would ever utlise that feature anyway.

I know exactly how you feel. But SuperLink is also right, this isn't that game, but the game that you and I are hoping for will happen...just not yet.

I do know what you mean though i also feel like since NEW Super Mario Bros they really have been milking the NEW franchise, its not that i don't like the NEW games but i'd rather they plug that resource into something else now.

Exactly how I feel.
There seems to have been a slow decline in exploration sadly.

I'd love to see a mario game with a nice big interesting mushroom kingdoom hub area, akin to exploring 64s castle.
Or, if its closer to Galaxy in theme, give us a decent plantiod to explore with lots of secrets. Galaxy1/2 had either boring or non-existant hubs. Barely any secrets in the whole game, let alone secret levels like we used to have.

dana. (guest) 26.07.2013#24

i hope this 3d world is good. galaxy was the best. im an avid super mario brothers player and i never even finished the most recent super mario brothers for the wii u. it was too boring. galaxy was the only game to save mario brothers. along with mario kart. hopefully this 3d isnt a bust or i may be out a 25 year relationship with nintendo.

Please make it happen. Have completed Galaxy 2 this week (it only took 187 goes at the Perfect Run).
