Miyamoto Working on New Nintendo Wii U Franchise on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo's design guru Shigeru Miyamoto recently teased a new franchise he's been working on.

Nintendo need games to sell on Wii U, and though a range of first-party efforts are coming, like Pikmin 3 and Mario Kart 8, the home of Mario is planning to think outside the box a little. Speaking to Famitsu this week, Miyamoto highlighted that "I've been thinking it would be a good time to bring out a new franchise", after the general selection of first-party games become available.

He also teased that though he can't talk "too much in detail right now" that he's been "pretty busy with this title these days".

Miyamoto is keen to, as well as create a new franchise, develop a new concept to go with it. "You really need to be focusing on creating a new gameplay experience that's fun and unique," he said during E3.

What genres would you like to see Nintendo tap into on the Wii U?

Smilie Probably true.

I think it would be interesting for Ninty to do something waaayyy outside of their normal fair, like a FPS or FPA (I know there is Metroid but I am talking different than that). Not your average Western Fps either, but a Nintendo made crazy game FPS/A. I feel like I recall Miyamoto saying in the past that he has thought about trying out the first person genre, but I could be wrong.

Also, a Horror/suspense game from Nintendo would be pretty cool.

Working like a fiend isn't very fun... and surprisingly isn't very fiendish either.

^ Ya, he did! Good point, maybe this'll be a new form of FPS/FPA game, the sorts Nintendo really does need.

Or use the assets they have and get Retro do make one.
Hell, or Geist  2.

From miyamoto I'd love a new IP that *doesnt* fit any established mold.

"Also, a Horror/suspense game from Nintendo would be pretty cool. "

And, for that, obviously, they need to get Precursor to do ED2.

Anything original from Miyamoto is usually pretty damn special.. but whether it's a completely original series or a new spinoff of an existing series remains to be seen.

Also it could just be like Wii Sports or somethin', but I'm hoping for something really new and unique.

How about a game from the baddie's perspective. I know Nintendo don't usually advocate going against the heroes, but would be interesting!

A game where the player develops a game would be nice. The guy is an expert at it, he might be able to mold his knowledge into a playable game. Simple enough to pick up and have fun while teaching the concepts of game development as concrete or abstract as they may be.

Looking at his track record, it doesn't seem likely though. Overall I feel the guy looks down on his audience with everything made simple and no real thinking effort needed. Steve Jobs was also like that. "Dumbing down" your products to appeal to the biggest crowd. I don't like it.

Anything new is a good thing especially from Shiggsy.......unless its Wii music 2!

When in doubt....Whip it out!

Wasn't there supposed to be a make-it-yourself warioware game?

There is WarioWare D.I.Y., but Miyamoto has never been directly involved in Wario game production afaik.

Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, F-Zero, Pikmin...maybe someday the poor guy will get a hit and make it big in the industry!

I think if you re-read his post, he isn't denying the creative genius that he is. Those series you listed are mostly decades old. Even Pikmin is over a decade old now. The newest ones Miyamoto has done haven't come close to matching these hardcore games - it's been casual stuff instead, which has been successful, but not for the serious players.

He's saying that by looking at his track record, a game where you can create your own is unlikely.

Indeed, I don't think you even need to discuss the creative giftedness and superb game designing skills of Miyamoto. I don't understand your needlessly overheated reaction Sonic13, with a weird sarcastic-agressive atmosphere that comes off as though I commented unfairly critical on your personal life.

Anyway, thank you Liff for understanding and explaining my thoughts which was shown to be necessary unfortunately.

Sorry if I offended you. I was just making a a quick joke. Wasn't really intended as commentary on your whole post. It was in no way heated.

Trabski (guest) 13.07.2013#16

No, I don't feel offended really. Your comment looks defensive to me, appearing to defend someone perfectly capable of standing up for himself if the need arose. Which will not happen on websites for the common man, I suspect.

But like you say, you were attempting to make me laugh with a quick joke. I don't see the humor in it myself, but good on you for trying. I like jokes, so maybe your next one will have me in stitches, as they say.

Fair enough Trabski! Sonic_13 jumps on anything and everything you say on these boards and always sounds threatened/defensive by many other people's opinions, often for no reason. I know that most of my mates I have encouraged to keep visiting the site have stopped coming because of him. He will go through your post and pick out the smallest thing to repost and be critical of which always creates tension here. It is fine to disagree and state your opinion but he needs to learn to accept others opinions even if they are not one eyed Nintendo. It is all about RESPECT for your fellow gamer.

If you have an issue with a member please please send a Moderator alert or address it with the member in question directly rather than being immature and unnecessarily making a big public fuss to insult or humiliate people who may not have intended any harm. There is really no need for public bitching especially if you wish to "respect your fellow gamer", maybe if you really "respected" fellow gamers you would address your problems directly and maturely via PM, asking people to tone it down for the sake of your mates who may find certain members intimidating, rather than behaving in a blatant passive aggressive manner and potentially causing further upset. Practice what you preach.

I didn't see anything in Sonic_13's posts in this thread at least that warrant this kind of reaction, and he even apologised for any potential offense he may have caused. To me it currently looks like he is being ganged up on and given grief by 2 or more posters for a comment he made out of misunderstanding. I see people trying to be the "bigger person" all the time, but handling it that way is not the way to go about it and only causes forum drama. Causing forum drama is not maturity.

PM me or another mod if you wish to discuss this further. I'm fed up of all the needless bad blood here. Otherwise, back on topic please.
