Namco Bandai Files New Soul Calibur Trademark on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Namco Bandai has filed a new trademark for what could potentially be a new entry in the Soul Calibur franchise.

Spotted by Joystiq, the new trademark for "Soul Calibur Lost Swords" was filed on July 11th, with the detail noting that it would be a game that could be "accessed network-wide by network users via mobile phones and computers; providing computer games via network between communications networks and computers."

It's likely that it could be a mobile/portable title, or app within the Soul Calibur universe.

Here's hoping for a return to the sword fighting series since Soulcalibur Legends on Nintendo Wii and fan-favourite, Soulcalibur II.

What do you think Soul Calibur Lost Swords could be?

It almost definitely is a social game, Namco seem to do one for each of their franchises.

However, I guess it's also something of an indication that the series isn't totally dead. Even if the gameplay and plot may as well be, haha.

Still dreaming for a Soulcalibur VI that's as big a return to form as many other fighting franchises have gotten lately. Tekken, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, King of Fighters and more are all returning to quality games of acclaim after years of questionable support and titles, it's about time Soulcalibur got that too.

I'd just settle for an HD remake of Soul Calibur II (Link included) with online play. That game still holds up really well today, love it.

I was massively disappointed in SCV - where were all the major classic characters? Seemed well rush and I recall it being created for fan-service.

Need those classic chaps - Hwang, Li-Long and now those axed characters like Yungsung, Sophitia..

SCII and Soul Edge/Blade still my faves by far.

Though I wasn't as fond of it as most, it's easily the most popular entry in the series I think. Namco would be making a good move doing that.

Couldn't agree more, the game was made out of nothing more than forced necessity and there was not an ounce of love or care put into it in comparison to earlier games like SB and SCI-III which shone with their huge amounts of content.

Getting rid of Hwang always bugged me, but getting rid of characters like Sophitia really took the biscuit.

Except it had the opposite effect when they removed characters everybody loved. Seung Mina for me.

This one is just likely to be some poor spin-off, and I can't see myself getting too hyped for a SCVI unless they undo the shit they've done and maybe do what a lot of fans want and throw Link in there, or a Tales main or two, or something. Odashima even said he wanted FF guest characters in it, so I would obviously settle for that.

Soul Calibur 2 HD Online coming to PS3 and Xbox 360. Guess there's no Wii U version with Link, sadly.

"Fan asked Hoshino-san about Link and Spawn for SC2 HD. Response? No comment. A later announcement will come." - John Chinnery at SDCC.

Funny that we were just talking about SC2, not surprised at all that it's not coming to Wii U, but I am annoyed at that too.

Especially since the GC version of SC2 actually sold best despite its small audience.
Sigh.

Jesus Christ, you gotta be fucking kidding me. I wonder if they couldn't get Nintendo's approval to use Link again or if it's the typical BS. While I do love using many other characters too, Link just made SC2 really special even though he was pretty broken. If they had a Wii U version with Link I would have even paid full price for it but I can't say I'm particularly excited to get this for my PS3.

Did they seriously forget how many people bought it on the Gamecube just for Link?...Smilie Everywhere I look I see comments talking about the lack of a Wii U version with Link.

For some reason, I feel like there's some hope with the number of people that are complaining about it/pestering the devs to make a Wii U version with Link. If it is a copyright case that couldn't be sorted with Nintendo then it's fair enough, but I can't see Nintendo turning down any sort of 3rd party support at this point. All I know is that a Wii U version with Link would go some way to making me purchase a Wii U sooner, and it's pretty much Namco's/Nintendo's loss depending on who's being arsey about it. But the fact Namco is developing Smash Bros 4 really makes you wonder why this hasn't been announced for Wii U, since they do seem to have a good relationship. Maybe this "Lost Swords" is a Wii U exclusive...

If it's anything like the Wii's "Soulcalibur Legends" it won't be worth it :/

I know. I think it's more likely to be a handheld game.

As much as I love SC2 if we don't get a wii u version I ain't buying it >.>

Well that's just some urban myth...

GC only sold 1.5m units worldwide, 2.06m on the PS2 and 1m on the Xbox, although i don't know how reliable these figures are.

Although i guess you could say the attach rate was better for the GC.

Me and my pals still play this occasionally when we meet up, i am not sure we would have purchased HD version. Be interesting to see if they add anything else other than online...

I would have thought given the Smash Bros connection Namco would have perhaps put this on the Wii U...Would have been a good little exclusive feature if they could have put Link in!

Think I've lost count of how many times I say VG Chartz is not an accurate source of sales data.

It seems to be pretty common knowledge the GC version of SC2 sold the most of the three versions.

Given Namco's track record, I bet Lost Swords will be a PS Vita exclusive.

Yeah, as far as I know it only sold around 10k or less more than the PS2 version, but given how unsuccessful the GC was that's an impressive feat. Link must have boosted sales considerably, so it's a shame that Namco are probably unwilling to try and renew that license or anything.

Funny you should mention the Vita, Namco acted a bit silly about that the other day.

Namco obviously don't dislike the Vita since they're making Gods Eater 2 for it, but still strange behavior.
