How the Sanity System Works in Shadow of the Eternals Wii U on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Shawn Jackson from Precursor Games this week described how Sanity events work in the Shadow of the Eternals.

The sanity system was used to brilliant effect in the original game, Eternal Darkness, and the studio want to carry across similar themes in the spiritual successor. Sanity is woven into magic, exploration, combat - where players may want to lose their sanity to access areas that may not be accessible in a normal state.

What are your thoughts on the Sanity effects returning in Shadow of the Eternals and these new puzzle mechanics?

looks nice shadow of the eternals.not many games provide the feature of losing the insanity to get something new in the game, i think its a nice feature.

This is a great addition to that the original did on the Cube. I just hope they screw with us well again...like changing the visuals to the original on the GC or causing a swarm of flies to gradually materialize on screen....or saying it's formating our system's hard drive due to corruption...that was MEAN!! Smilie

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

With the failure of the kickstarter campaign, we probably will see graphics like that. And you can count on Dennis Dyack and his team to screw you over.

Sorry for the pessimism... it's all great in concept, but these guys haven't made a great game in 10 years. I won't trust them with my money.

i think people are being a little overly harsh on them, too human wasn't great but it was one design element that stood in the way of it being good. Its like slamming Masahiro Sakurai for messing up Kid Icarus's controls.

Hmm, from the way he explains it, I don't think like his ideas for how insanity could affect gameplay. Like when he says there might be a door on the ceiling and then, if you're insane, the room will rotate and you can walk on wall and reach the door. If I understand him right, that would mean that when you're in that room and go insane, the same thing will happen every time you play through the game. Insanity should make the player question if what they're doing is real, or it should be chaotic (the moments like that in Eternal Darkness are why I like that game).

But clearly this is just my opinion on how I would make the game. And it's not one I'm holding to zealously. It just seems weird to me for there to be any sort of deliberate order with insanity.

Also, was that an insanity moment at the end of his video? That was nice Smilie

a) They have a limited budget, hardly their fault here. Graphics wasn't what made ED great - it was story, atmosphere and somewhat original mechcanics.

b) Can we please quite the slurs against Dyack? We are supposed to live in a world were people are innocent till proven guilty.
Yet one anoms source on the internet, and suddenly the guy gets non stop hate.

The failure of Too Human and X-men to get very good reviews just shows they cant make great hack and slash games.

Doesn't really tell you squat about their ability to make something like ED.
