Miyamoto: Retro High Priority for New Metroid Title on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine quizzed Miyamoto on a possible new entry in the popular Metroid series.

Metroid is one of the franchises that Nintendo have mixed up in recent years, passing the baton to Retro Studios for a critically-acclaimed first person adventure trilogy and to Team Ninja for a side-scrolling hybrid in Other: M.

Many fans had predicted that Retro had returned to the helm when it came to a new Metroid title for Wii U, however the team are working on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze instead as there had been numerous ideas since working on Donkey Kong Country Returns.

In the magazine, Miyamoto said that Nintendo "certainly want to see what we can do with it in the future" and that "Retro is a very high priority in terms of the potential team that would be considered for working on a Metroid game".

What are your thoughts on the future of Metroid - would you like another Metroid Prime styled adventure, or should Retro attempt a side-scroller?

I wish Retro were much bigger allowing them to work on two games at a time. Everything they've done is fantastic but it's one of those catch-22 situations. I want them to work on a new Metroid game but then they can't work on a Star Fox game. And vice-versa. Time is a bitch. Smilie

I think Retro would be a good fit for a side-scrolling Metroid instead, given they've done a fair bit of side-on in DKCR.

I think WayForward should make a side-scrolling Metroid with assistance from Nintendo. Screw 2.5D perspectives. Hand drawn sprites would be a godsend for Metroid.

Here's how I think things should go:
Metroid - 2D Side Scroller (WayForward and Nintendo) (eShop Download)
New Metroid Prime/Metroid FPA (Retro Studios) (Wii U Retail)

RETRO!!!  No more 3D Metroid / Zelda games, for a while.  I get that we want innovation and new gaming experiences, but there wouldn't be so much buzz every time a Virtual Console game is released and climbs the charts if it didn't indicate that there's a market for those types of games.

Like that idea actually - both would be well suited and perhaps even they could includ the 2D metroid on the 3D disc?

arg. We have enough 2D already. The WiiU doesnt need that,

Loved  A boy and his blob but Metroid should be a modern Retro style Smilie

There's enough room for both 2D and 3D games, but I agree that Nintendo should let Retro make another FPA Metroid in HD if they want to show people they mean business.

New Retro Metroid would be a system seller for me.
