The Nintendo DualScreen...
...Gaining Support Left, Right & Centre!

Ever since being announced as a reality to the public by Nintendo, the so-far-unseen portable system codenamed 'Nintendo DS' has been under the spotlight. Will this bring in a new age of innovation or will Nintendo have another Virtual Boy on its hands?

Several naysayers hastily flocked to the shelter of the latter option, stating they believe the Sony PlayStation Portable will annihilate all the competition. However, Nintendo has been sending out prototypes of the DualScreen hardware to various developers and the reaction has actually been far more positive than probably even some Nintendo executives expected.

With names like Sega, Konami, Electronic Arts and Namco already firmly behind the DS, tied with the First- and Second-Party Nintendo titles that are currently being worked on and the knowledge that Square Enix is considering development for the two-screened, touch-padded portable, the system is likely to have a much stronger base of titles than the abysmally supported Virtual Boy had.

The recent Games Developers Conference held even more promise for the little bundle of innovation. Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the ex-SEGA employee that created 'Rez' for the Sonic Company and resigned just six months ago from the United Game Artists section of the large developer to form his own independent company for more freedom, stated that he plans on releasing a spiritual successor to the Rez series. He mentioned that his system of choice would likely be the PSP or Nintendo DS, and his newly formed company, Q Entertainment, would release details either at E3 in May or sometime next year.

On a side note, the actual name would have to differ from 'Rez 2' since SEGA still holds the rights to the brand name.

This is certainly excellent news for many fans of the original title, but the good news does not cease there. Vicarious Visions, the extremely talented group that will be well-known to GBA owners especially for its exemplary work on the Tony Hawk's series for Nintendo's baby, the Game Boy Advance, has brought to light its desires to create new products for the DS as well. The hiring of dedicated DS staff has already begun so it should only be a matter of time before we hear any details on the projects under construction.
